The festival of prickly pears and mustard in the quadaruni at Gagliano Castelferrato
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
The Prickly Pear Mustard Festival is the most important gastronomic event in Gagliano Castelferrato, a small town in the Province of Enna perched around its cliff and Norman castle in the heart of Sicily. Having reached over twenty editions (the 23rd was held in 2017), the event has celebrated the region's iconic fruit for decades: the prickly pear, specifically the prized local variety known as 'Bastardone di Sicilia'.
The heart of the festival is the preparation of prickly pear mustard, made from the fruit's must and slow-cooked in characteristic 'quadaruni'—large copper cauldrons—following an ancient recipe passed down through generations. Live cooking demonstrations allow visitors to discover every stage of the process, from harvesting the fruit to the final thick preserve, which is then offered for tasting while warm.
Stalls from exhibitors across Sicily line the streets of the historic center and the dedicated event area. In addition to the mustard, visitors can sample 'Bastardone' prickly pears, sweets and preserves made from the fruit, and other gastronomic specialties from the Enna hinterland. In recent editions, the Pro Loco has also introduced vino cotto (cooked wine), another product of local peasant tradition.
The program alternates between food and wine experiences, musical performances, folk groups, traditional Sicilian songs and dances, guided tours of the village, and family entertainment. In recent years, the festival has hosted nationally renowned artists and evening DJ sets, turning the two-day event into a popular celebration that attracts visitors from the entire region.
For the community of Gagliano Castelferrato, the festival represents much more than a food event: it is an opportunity to showcase the inland areas, promote rural traditions, and boost tourism in the village. The event, which has free admission, typically takes place at the end of September, effectively opening the season of major Sicilian autumn festivals. The dates for the 2026 edition have not yet been announced by the organizers.
The dates and program for the 2026 edition of the Prickly Pear Mustard Festival have not yet been made official. Based on established tradition, the event is expected to be held in late September in Gagliano Castelferrato (Province of Enna), with the usual program of mustard tastings in quadaruni, stalls selling prickly pear-based local products, cooking demonstrations, and musical performances. The Pro Loco will publish the full program in the weeks leading up to the event.
Gagliano Castelferrato is located in the hinterland of the Province of Enna. By car, it can be reached from the A19 Palermo-Catania motorway (Mulinello exit), continuing inland, or via the SS117. The nearest train stations are along the line towards Enna and Catania, with onward travel by car or bus.
Admission to the festival is free. Tastings of warm mustard are traditionally free; samples and products at the exhibitors' stalls are available for purchase.
We recommend wearing comfortable clothing for walking through the historic center, which includes some uphill paths towards the cliff and the castle. Evenings can be cool: bring a light jacket.
