The international mountain wine festival in the Cembra Valley
The Müller Thurgau Festival: Mountain Wine is the most anticipated oenological event in the Cembra Valley, located in the municipality of Cembra Lisignago, in the province of Trento, Trentino-Alto Adige region. Established in the late 1980s, the festival has turned this small village into the Italian capital of Müller Thurgau—a white grape variety that perfectly embodies high-altitude viticulture, grown on the dry-stone terraced slopes that define the valley.
The festival's main venue is the historic Palazzo Maffei, a 17th-century building in the center of Cembra. It hosts major tastings featuring dozens of labels not only from the Cembra Valley and Trentino but also from South Tyrol and other wine-producing regions and countries. Surrounding the palace, the village streets and squares come alive with a packed calendar of events blending wine, gastronomy, art, music, and street theater.
The highlight of the festival is the awards ceremony for the International Müller Thurgau Wine Competition, which gathers a jury of oenologists, journalists, and sommeliers to evaluate the best global interpretations of the variety. Now in its twentieth year, the competition confirms Cembra's role as an international benchmark for this mountain white wine.
In addition to tastings guided by AIS sommeliers, the festival offers immersive territorial experiences:
Attending the Müller Thurgau Festival means discovering the Cembra Valley and its heroic viticulture, defined by terraces, porphyry rock, and the hard work of farmers. Organized by the Comitato Mostra Valle di Cembra with the support of the Autonomous Province of Trento and Trentino Marketing, the event is now part of the "Vini e Montagna" project, which highlights the bond between wine and the alpine environment of Trentino-Alto Adige.
From July 2nd to 5th, 2026, the Cembra Valley hosted the 39th edition of the Müller Thurgau Festival: Mountain Wine, with Palazzo Maffei serving as the hub for four days of tastings and meetings. Guests sampled 63 labels of Müller Thurgau from the Cembra Valley, Trentino, South Tyrol, Sicily, Marche, Sardinia, Friuli Venezia Giulia, and abroad.
Highlights included a masterclass by sommelier and journalist Giuseppe Carrus (Gambero Rosso) on alpine rock and the Mediterranean sea, a mixology workshop with bartender Leonardo Veronesi, the "Around the World in 80 Müllers" showcooking with MasterChef 11 winner Tracy Eboigbodin featuring West African flavors. The event also featured the Heroes vineyard trekking, the Cantine in sella e-bike tour, and the awards ceremony for the 23rd International Competition. The edition, which was almost entirely sold out, introduced the new image and logo for the "Vini e Montagna" project.
Cembra Lisignago is located in the Cembra Valley, about 20 km from Trento. By car: take the A22 motorway, exit at Trento Nord/San Michele all'Adige, then follow the SP71 towards Val di Cembra. By train: arrive at Trento station, then take the Trentino Trasporti suburban bus line to Cembra.
The festival takes place at Palazzo Maffei and in the historic center of Cembra. For opening hours, tasting tickets, and the detailed program, please visit the official website mostramullerthurgau.it.
Many side events (masterclasses, dinners, e-bike tours) have limited capacity and often sell out: early booking is highly recommended. During peak season, it is advisable to book accommodation in the valley well in advance.
