Knowledge and flavors of the Sicani Mountains in San Giovanni Gemini
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
Every year in December, San Giovanni Gemini becomes the culinary capital of the Sicani Mountains. The Mountain Fair is a long-standing event that brings together producers, farmers, master cheesemakers, and artisans from the Agrigento region to share the identity of a mountain territory defined by pastures, forests, and ancient farming traditions. The event takes place in the "Giovanni Scrudato" Sports Hall, which is transformed for the occasion into a large indoor exhibition center.
San Giovanni Gemini has long been known as the "City of Cheese": the cow, sheep, and goat milk from the Sicani pastures gives rise to excellent products such as provola, primosale, pecorino canestrato, and caciocavallo. Alongside the cheeses, the fair's stalls feature fresh ricotta, local meats, cured meats, legumes (chickpeas, lentils, beans), extra virgin olive oil, bread, traditional sweets like Christmas buccellato, and local wines. It is a precious opportunity to learn about and purchase directly from the producers, supporting the local supply chain.
The Mountain Fair is more than just a market: the schedule alternates between cooking shows, guided tastings, taste workshops, thematic conferences on mountain agriculture and regional policies, and live entertainment. In its most extensive editions, the event has hosted chefs and well-known figures from the culinary world, pairing the promotion of local products with a cultural program designed to engage families, curious visitors, and food enthusiasts alike.
Located in the heart of central-western Sicily, on the border between the Agrigento area and the Sicani Mountains, San Giovanni Gemini forms a single urban fabric with nearby Cammarata, with which it shares history, landscape, and an agro-pastoral vocation. The fair thus becomes a moment of tourism promotion for the entire district, inviting visitors to discover an authentic hinterland, far from mass tourism routes, defined by nature, hiking, and genuine flavors.
The Mountain Fair returns every year in December to San Giovanni Gemini, in the heart of the Sicani Mountains. At the moment, the dates and program for the 2026 edition have not yet been announced. As in previous editions, the event is expected to showcase the typical products of the district - cheeses, meats, legumes, wines, and oil - along with cooking shows, tastings, and in-depth discussions on the rural culture of the Sicani. For the final calendar, please consult the official channels of the Municipality.
San Giovanni Gemini is located in the Agrigento hinterland, in the Sicani Mountains. By car, it can be reached via the SS 189 (Palermo-Agrigento) with a detour towards Casteltermini and Cammarata, or via the SS 118. The reference railway station is Acquaviva-Casteltermini, which is connected by local bus lines.
The fair is held at the "Giovanni Scrudato" Sports Hall. Over the years, opening hours have covered both morning and afternoon/evening slots. It is recommended to check the updated program on the Municipality's official channels and the dedicated Facebook page.
Admission to the fair is free.
