One of the oldest livestock fairs in Western Sicily, held at the Foro Boario in Contrada Zachia
The Historic Livestock Fair of Prizzi is one of the most deeply rooted and ancient agricultural and livestock events in Western Sicily. Its origins are documented as far back as 1789, when its charter was first granted. Originally held on May 5th for the feast of Saint Angelo, the fair was later moved to September 14th, the day of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, as it was considered more suitable for large crowds. Today, the fair is still held at the Foro Boario in Contrada Zachia, within the territory of Prizzi, a village in the Sicani Mountains in the Province of Palermo, Sicily.
The unique feature of this fair is its recurrence, held four times a year to coincide with the town's main religious and civil celebrations:
The heart of the event is the Exhibition of Select Cattle Breeds, which brings together local farms and their livestock registered in genealogical books and breed registries. Exhibited breeds include Modicana, Cinisiara, and Pezzata Rossa, alongside Charolaise and Limousine specimens. The exhibition preserves the fair's ancient role as a major livestock market and a hub for trade among inland farmers.
Beyond the livestock section, the fair maintains its character as a large rural market: stalls selling agricultural produce, work tools, household goods, toys, and local gastronomic specialties. In recent years, the event has expanded to include a street food area along Via Libertà, accompanied by musical evenings, concerts, and cabaret shows that enliven the squares of Prizzi.
The Prizzi Livestock Fair is organized by the Prizzese Agro-Zootecnica Association with the patronage of the Municipality of Prizzi. More than just a commercial event, it represents a core identity marker for the Sicani Mountains community, where rural tradition, religious faith, and social life intertwine in one of Sicily's longest-running fairs.
The grand SS. Crocifisso Fair, the main edition of the Historic Livestock Fair of Prizzi, is confirmed for September 14, 2026, at the Foro Boario in Contrada Zachia. The day begins early in the morning with the Exhibition of Select Cattle Breeds (Modicana, Cinisiara, Pezzata Rossa) and continues with the large market of local products, tools, and gastronomy.
Throughout the year, the fair also returns on April 23 for St. George, the first Sunday of June for the Statute, and the third Sunday of October for the Madonna del Soccorso. The detailed program for the 2026 edition — featuring street food along Via Libertà, concerts, and cabaret shows — will be announced by the Prizzese Agro-Zootecnica Association in the weeks leading up to the event.
