The prickly pear festival in the 'town of the stars', nestled in the hills near Palermo
The Opuntia Ficus-Indica Fest, better known as the Prickly Pear Festival, is the flagship event of Roccapalumba, a small town in the Province of Palermo tucked away in the hills of inland Sicily. Every year in mid-October, the village celebrates the fruit that has become its symbol and economic engine: the prickly pear, or Opuntia ficus-indica, which originated in Mexico and has perfectly adapted to the Sicilian landscape over the centuries.
Roccapalumba is known as the 'town of the stars' due to its astronomical heritage. During the festival, visitors can explore the municipal observatory and astronomical facilities, as well as the Local Territory Museum and the Museum of Peasant and Railway Civilization. The event is the perfect opportunity to discover the village's entire heritage, blending nature, starry skies, and folk traditions.
The heart of the festival is the prickly pear tasting in all its forms: from fresh fruit to pastries, jams, and mustards, to the famous scuzzulata, the traditional prickly pear liqueur. Over the years, the festival has evolved to offer creative pairings, from prickly pear sushi to mixology competitions featuring local ingredients like almonds and pomegranates. Stalls showcasing handicrafts, local products, and Sicilian culinary specialties line the streets of the town center.
The Opuntia Ficus-Indica Fest is much more than a food and wine festival: it is a celebration of the identity of Roccapalumba and rural Sicily, which has transformed a once-marginal crop into a premium product exported as far as Spain and Greece. With free admission, a charming village atmosphere, and over 30,000 visitors a year, it is one of the most beloved autumn events in the Palermo hinterland.
The 26th edition of the Prickly Pear Festival in Roccapalumba (Province of Palermo) is scheduled for mid-October 2026. Sources confirm the event will take place over the weekend of October 17-19, 2026, with some reports suggesting October 16-18.
As per tradition, the event will celebrate the prickly pear with tastings, sweets, liqueurs, local product markets, musical performances, folklore, and guided tours of the orchards and the astronomical observatory of the 'town of the stars'. The detailed program for the 2026 edition has not yet been announced: the Municipality will publish it in the weeks leading up to the event.
