About Prickly Pear Festival

Every October, Roccapalumbaโ€”a small village in the Palermo Madonie mountains known as the 'town of the stars'โ€”celebrates its signature fruit with the Opuntia Ficus-Indica Fest. For three days, the historic center transforms into a culinary trail featuring tastings, local craft markets, live entertainment, folklore, and guided tours of prickly pear orchards and the municipal astronomical observatory. This popular, free event attracts over 30,000 visitors annually.

The Opuntia Ficus-Indica Fest in Roccapalumba

The Opuntia Ficus-Indica Fest, better known as the Prickly Pear Festival, is the flagship event of Roccapalumba, a small town in the Province of Palermo tucked away in the hills of inland Sicily. Every year in mid-October, the village celebrates the fruit that has become its symbol and economic engine: the prickly pear, or Opuntia ficus-indica, which originated in Mexico and has perfectly adapted to the Sicilian landscape over the centuries.

The Town of the Stars

Roccapalumba is known as the 'town of the stars' due to its astronomical heritage. During the festival, visitors can explore the municipal observatory and astronomical facilities, as well as the Local Territory Museum and the Museum of Peasant and Railway Civilization. The event is the perfect opportunity to discover the village's entire heritage, blending nature, starry skies, and folk traditions.

Taste and Gastronomy

The heart of the festival is the prickly pear tasting in all its forms: from fresh fruit to pastries, jams, and mustards, to the famous scuzzulata, the traditional prickly pear liqueur. Over the years, the festival has evolved to offer creative pairings, from prickly pear sushi to mixology competitions featuring local ingredients like almonds and pomegranates. Stalls showcasing handicrafts, local products, and Sicilian culinary specialties line the streets of the town center.

Entertainment, Folklore, and Guided Tours

  • Concerts, live music, and evening performances in the square
  • Folkloric groups and costume parades
  • Taste workshops and guided tastings
  • Guided tours of prickly pear orchards with agronomists and chefs
  • Exhibitions, displays, and craft markets

A Celebration of Identity

The Opuntia Ficus-Indica Fest is much more than a food and wine festival: it is a celebration of the identity of Roccapalumba and rural Sicily, which has transformed a once-marginal crop into a premium product exported as far as Spain and Greece. With free admission, a charming village atmosphere, and over 30,000 visitors a year, it is one of the most beloved autumn events in the Palermo hinterland.
