The village of Valnerina returns to the 15th century for the feast of San Bernardino
In Montefranco, perched above the Nera gorge in the province of Terni, the Historical Re-enactment of the passage of San Bernardino of Siena brings the village back to the year 1444 every spring. For four days, the historic center transforms into a 15th-century village: torches and braziers replace streetlights, workshops are recreated, the air is filled with the scent of bread and spices, and hundreds of residents wear the clothing of the era.
The festival originates from a legend dear to the community. It is said that Friar Bernardino, traveling from Siena to L'Aquila, stopped in Montefranco and asked for hospitality from a poor widow who had nothing to offer: only after the friar's insistence did the woman find her pantry full of fresh bread. This episode is also linked to the mark left by the saint on a rock, indicating the place where a convent would later be built. Two miracles that the re-enactment stages every year.
Along the alleys, the activities of the past are revived: the money changer, the carpenter, the blacksmith, the apothecary, the candlemaker, the baker, and the tavern. Alongside scenes of village life, there are historical processions, competitions of drummers and flag-wavers, musicians, and costumed groups, some from other villages. At the Tavern of San Bernardino, you can taste traditional Umbrian cuisine, from ciriole to stuffed focaccias and lentils from the Valnerina.
The event, in its current costumed form, has been held in Montefranco since 1986 (historical costumes were introduced as early as 1954) and involves about fifty organizers and five hundred participants per day. It takes place in the third week of May, around the feast of San Bernardino (May 20th) and the following weekend, and is one of the most cherished events in the upper Valnerina area of Terni.
For 2026, Montefranco is once again preparing to return to the 15th century for the Historical Re-enactment of the passage of San Bernardino of Siena. The festival, as every year, should unfold over four days in the third week of May, around the 20th (the saint's feast day) and the following weekend, featuring artisan workshops, costumed processions, competitions of drummers and flag-wavers, musicians, and taverns with traditional Umbrian cuisine.
Currently, the precise dates and program for the 2026 edition have not yet been published. For updates, it is advisable to follow the Pro Loco Montefranco channels and the local tourism website.
