The threshing and wheat festival of Mulino Caputo in Frignano
The Miller's New Year is one of the most original rural festivals in Campania: every summer, in the municipality of Frignano, in the province of Caserta, the community gathers in the fields to celebrate the wheat threshing, the moment when the land yields the fruits of a year's labor. It is not the New Year of December, but the miller's: the symbolic beginning of a new agricultural cycle, marked by the rhythm of the seasons.
The event was born under the Grano Nostrum initiative, a project launched in 2016 by Mulino Caputo, a historic Neapolitan milling company active since 1924. Grano Nostrum is the first soft wheat supply chain in Southern Italy: starting from the experimental fields of the Francesco D'Amore farm in Frignano, it has expanded to cover thousands of hectares across Campania, Puglia, Molise, Basilicata, and Abruzzo, with varieties selected to withstand climate change. During the festival, visitors can follow the entire transformation cycle of the grain, from sowing to the slow milling process that preserves its organoleptic properties.
The heart of the event is the threshing, accompanied by demonstrations of ancient crafts and the work of pizza makers, bakers, and pastry chefs from all over Italy, who knead and bake live using Caputo flours. The festival combines the flavor of rural tradition with a scientific dimension: the project collaborates with the Department of Agricultural Sciences of the University of Naples Federico II, which studies varieties, fertilization, and supply chain sustainability. The result is a day where tastings, meetings, and knowledge intertwine in the fields.
Frignano is a small town in the Aversa area, on the Campanian plain once known as the Terra di Lavoro, among the most fertile in Southern Italy. Here, wheat cultivation has ancient roots, and the Miller's New Year revives its identity, bringing attention back to the work of farmers and the bond between territory, food, and community.
Designed to involve families, young people, and the curious, as well as industry professionals, the event attracts national media interest every year. Participants get an up-close look at the miller's and farmer's craft in an atmosphere that recalls the agricultural fairs of the past, with a contemporary focus on quality and sustainability.
The tenth edition of the Miller's New Year was held on Monday, July 6, 2026, in the fields of the Francesco D'Amore farm in Frignano (CE), as confirmed by the national press. The date, as every year, was set based on the wheat ripening cycle. The day celebrated the threshing of the Grano Nostrum wheat by Mulino Caputo, combining rural tradition, taste, and agricultural research with the collaboration of the Department of Agricultural Sciences of the University Federico II.
The day revolved around the wheat threshing in the fields of the Francesco D'Amore farm, the highlight of the festival. The program included a demonstration of the entire grain transformation cycle, from field to flour, demonstrations of ancient crafts, a meeting between producers, pizza makers, bakers, and pastry chefs from all over Italy with live processing of Caputo flours, tastings, and in-depth sessions with the Department of Agricultural Sciences of the University Federico II. No detailed official schedule was released.
The Miller's New Year is held in the fields of the Francesco D'Amore farm in Frignano (CE), Campania. The location is in the Aversa area, a short distance from Aversa and about 30 km from Naples and Caserta.
