The patronal feast of Cancello ed Arnone in honor of its patron saint
The Feast of Maria Santissima delle Grazie is the primary religious and popular celebration in Cancello ed Arnone, a town in the province of Caserta, Campania, nestled along the lower course of the Volturno river. For over a century, the community has venerated the Madonna delle Grazie as its patron saint, preserving the cult in the 18th-century Chapel of Maria SS. delle Grazie, a precious place of worship on Via Roma that houses devotional paintings, statues, and frescoes.
The unique feature of this patronal feast is its dual schedule: the first on July 2nd, in the heart of summer, and the second on the second Sunday of September. On both occasions, the town gathers around its Madonna with days of prayer, solemn Eucharistic celebrations, and the traditional procession that accompanies the sacred effigy through the streets of the town center, amidst the moving participation of the faithful.
The festival is organized by the Festivities Committee in collaboration with the parish and thrives year-round thanks to the commitment of citizens, young people, and local businesses. In the period leading up to the festivities, the committee promotes pilgrimages and fundraising initiatives: in 2026, a pilgrimage was organized to Pietrelcina, the land of Saint Pio, and another to the Shrine of the Blessed Virgin of the Rosary of Pompei, with proceeds dedicated to supporting the July festival expenses. It is a model of popular celebration where devotion and social cohesion go hand in hand.
As in the great patronal feasts of Southern Italy, religious rites are accompanied by secular celebrations: streets decorated with illuminations, town square music, and the conviviality that enlivens the village. For the inhabitants of Cancello ed Arnone, and for the many emigrants who return for this occasion, the Feast of Maria SS. delle Grazie represents an identity-defining event, capable of renewing the bond between generations, memory, and the territory every year.
Visiting Cancello ed Arnone during the festival means immersing yourself in one of the most authentic religious traditions of the Terra di Lavoro. The Chapel of Maria SS. delle Grazie, the spiritual heart of the celebration, testifies to the depth of a devotion that has accompanied the community for generations and continues to mark the town's calendar between July and September.
In 2026, the community of Cancello ed Arnone renews its devotion to its patron saint, Maria Santissima delle Grazie, with the usual dual schedule on July 2nd and the second Sunday of September (September 13th). The preparation path was marked by moments of faith and solidarity: a pilgrimage to Pietrelcina and one to the Shrine of Pompei, organized by the Festivities Committee with the parish, the proceeds of which are intended to cover the costs of the festivities.
The detailed program of liturgical celebrations and the procession is released by the Committee and the parish in the days preceding each occurrence.
