Allegorical floats and masks in the heart of central Sicily
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
The Milena Carnival is one of the most anticipated events of the year for this small town in the province of Caltanissetta, nestled in the hills of central Sicily. For several days, the streets of the main town and its characteristic rural villages, known as robbe, are filled with color, music, and joy, featuring a parade of allegorical floats and costumed groups that involves the entire community.
The heart of the festival is the parade of allegorical floats, handcrafted in the preceding months by local groups using papier-mรขchรฉ, imagination, and plenty of volunteer work. Accompanying the floats are costumed groups that enliven the procession with outfits, choreography, and satirical or whimsical disguises. The parade winds through the town's streets in a festive atmosphere that brings together children, young people, and adults.
In addition to the parades, the Milena Carnival offers music and dancing in the square, performances, entertainment, and games for children. There is no shortage of tastings of local products: the town is known for its wines, olive oil, almonds, and specialties such as 'mbriulata (a rustic pastry filled with potatoes, olives, cheese, and pork) and pane scanatu, hand-decorated according to ancient peasant traditions.
Milena is a unique municipality: its territory includes the main center and thirteen rural villages, the robbe, born from ancient feudal lands and authentic witnesses to Sicilian peasant life. This deep bond with tradition is also felt in the Carnival, which remains a genuine popular festival, far from the tourist-heavy atmosphere of the island's larger carnivals, yet capable of powerfully expressing the community's identity.
Organized with the support of the Associazione Movida Milena and local entities, the Milena Carnival is an opportunity for meeting and socializing for the entire Municipality of Milena and visitors from neighboring towns. The dates for the 2026 edition have not yet been officially announced: as per tradition, the event takes place during the Carnival period between late winter and early spring.
The 2026 edition of the Milena Carnival does not yet have official dates published. As per tradition, the festival includes the parade of handcrafted allegorical floats, costumed groups, music, and dancing in the square, as well as tastings of typical local products. Information will be updated as soon as the organizers announce the final calendar.
