The ancient ceremony of blessed bread in the Langa of Belvedere
In the heart of the Alta Langa, in the municipality of Belvedere Langhe (Province of Cuneo, Piedmont), one of the most cherished events of the local calendar is renewed every year: the Micùn Festival, linked to the figure of Saint Sebastian. It is traditionally held on the second Sunday after Easter and draws inhabitants, returning emigrants, and visitors curious to discover a rite that has spanned the centuries to this small Langhe village.
The origins of the festival date back to the early 1600s, when the Confraternity of Saint Sebastian was established in Belvedere, formed by the so-called battuti bianchi (white-robed penitents), named for the color of the cape worn during services. The confraternity, based in the oratory dedicated to Saints Sebastian and Fabian, has passed down the care of the chapel and the rite of the blessed bread from generation to generation. The festival is also known as la festa dij Ömi, the men's festival, because it once brought together the brothers of the town, enrolled from birth.
The heart of the day is the Micùn, large white loaves prepared according to local tradition. After the Eucharistic celebration in the Chapel of Saint Sebastian and the procession with the statue of the Saint through the village streets, the loaves are blessed and distributed to those present. In the past, the micùn was jealously kept in homes as a sign of devotion and protection against illness and misfortune; today, it is offered in exchange for a voluntary donation, the proceeds of which support the chapel and charitable initiatives of the territory and the diocese.
Among the UNESCO World Heritage hills of the Langa, the Micùn Festival is much more than a simple patronal feast: it is a community rite that weaves together faith, rural memory, and the identity of an entire town. For those visiting Belvedere Langhe in spring, it is an opportunity to experience an authentic fragment of Piedmontese culture, far from mass tourism circuits.
For the 2026 edition, the Micùn Festival returned to Belvedere Langhe on Sunday, April 19th, faithful to the appointment of the second Sunday after Easter. The day confirmed the centuries-old tradition of the Alta Langa village, with the ceremony of the blessed bread at the center of the festivities in honor of Saint Sebastian.
The afternoon celebration also saw a significant moment for the life of the community: the handover of leadership of the Confraternity of Saint Sebastian, with the investiture of the new prior.
The festival takes place on the second Sunday after Easter. In 2026, the event was held on Sunday, April 19th.
