A stroll through the olive groves of Montepulciano, featuring extra virgin olive oil tastings and local farm-to-table products.
Merenda nell'Oliveta is a late-spring event that invites locals and visitors to immerse themselves in the olive groves of Montepulciano, nestled in the hills of the Sienese Valdichiana, in the province of Siena (Tuscany). The initiative is part of a national circuit promoted by the National Association of Olive Oil Cities (Associazione Nazionale Città dell'Olio), which involves dozens of Italian municipalities every year between late April and late June. In Montepulciano, the event is carefully curated by the local Pro Loco.
More than just a tasting, Merenda nell'Oliveta is an experience that blends nature, culture, and conviviality. Participants walk among centuries-old olive trees to learn about the iconic Mediterranean tree and the hard work behind the local extra virgin olive oil. The route includes short tasting workshops led by expert sommeliers, presentations of social and cultural projects, and activities dedicated to children.
The heart of the event lies in farm-to-table products from the Valdichiana: fresh extra virgin olive oil, freshly prepared bruschetta, cheeses, and specialties from local farms. Past editions have taken place in various locations within the municipality, including Sant'Albino, Cervognano, and the picnic area of the Caseificio Cugusi, with the collaboration of local mills and producers.
The event is also an invitation to explore one of Tuscany's most beloved towns, famous for its Vino Nobile di Montepulciano and the Renaissance-style Temple of San Biagio, which often serves as a meeting point for the event. Walking through the olive groves surrounding the city, with views over the Valdichiana hills, is the perfect way to grasp the deep bond between this landscape and its gastronomic culture.
A simple and authentic afternoon, designed for those who love nature, good food, and the traditions of the Tuscan land.
For 2026, the Merenda nell'Oliveta in Montepulciano is set for Saturday, May 23, in line with the national calendar of the Association of Olive Oil Cities, which for the 2026 edition runs on weekends from April 25 to June 28 in numerous Italian municipalities. The event will once again offer the traditional walk through the olive groves of the Sienese Valdichiana, with tastings of extra virgin olive oil and local specialties. The detailed program (meeting time, precise location, and activities) is usually published by the Pro Loco of Montepulciano in the weeks leading up to the event.
The event takes place in the olive groves of Montepulciano (SI), in Tuscany. The meeting point is often set at the Temple of San Biagio, from where participants move towards the olive grove or the picnic area designated for that year (past locations include the Caseificio Cugusi on Via della Boccia, or the hamlets of Sant'Albino and Cervognano).
By car: Montepulciano is accessible from the Valdichiana exit (A1) or via the Bettolle-Siena road. By train: Montepulciano station is on the Siena-Chiusi line, connected to the town center by bus. A car is recommended to reach the olive groves in the countryside.
We recommend wearing comfortable shoes and clothing suitable for a walk and a picnic in the countryside. Reservations are appreciated and can be made through the Pro Loco of Montepulciano (tel. +39 0578 757341, [email protected]).
