Chestnuts, mushrooms, and the flavors of Mount Amiata in a medieval village
The Abbadia San Salvatore Autumn Festival is one of the most beloved and deeply rooted events in the calendar of Mount Amiata, in the heart of Tuscany's Siena province. For two weekends in October, the medieval village surrounding the ancient Lombard abbey dresses in seasonal colors, welcoming thousands of visitors eager to discover the flavors, traditions, and unique atmosphere of the Sienese mountains.
The undisputed star is the chestnut, queen of the Amiata woods, served in every imaginable form: from roasted chestnuts cooked over braziers along the streets to chestnut polenta, castagnaccio, and traditional rustic desserts. Alongside them, you will find mushrooms from the beech forests, new wine, and fresh grape must, creating a culinary journey that rediscovers forgotten mountain dishes.
The gastronomic heart of the festival is concentrated in the stalls set up in Piazza Giosuè Carducci (Santa Croce area), where traditional Amiata menus are served. Throughout the historic center, you will find craft markets, art exhibitions, hobbyist displays, collectibles, small antiques, and stalls from local farms showcasing typical regional products.
The Autumn Festival is not just about food: the program features nature walks in the beech forests accompanied by environmental guides and mycological experts, chestnut and mushroom foraging excursions, and guided tours of the historic center, the Abbey of San Salvatore (founded in 750 AD), and the evocative Mining Museum Park. The event also features traditional games in the squares, street performances, buskers, and live music to liven up the evenings.
The event is organized by the Pro Loco of Abbadia San Salvatore in collaboration with the Maggiore, Borgo, and Fabbri districts and the Convento neighborhood, under the patronage of the Municipality of Abbadia San Salvatore. It is the perfect opportunity to discover one of the most characteristic villages of the Amiata region during its most beautiful season, when the beech forests turn shades of red and gold. For the 2026 edition, a special connection with the Treno Natura, the historic steam train departing from Siena, has been confirmed.
The 2026 Autumn Festival confirms its historic dates during the second and third weekends of October, enlivening the historic center of Abbadia San Salvatore with food stalls dedicated to chestnuts and mushrooms, craft markets, beech forest hikes, and guided tours of the Abbey and the Mining Museum Park.
