Running through the vineyards and woods of Chianti Classico in Castelnuovo Berardenga
The Chianti Classico EcoMarathon is one of Tuscany's most beloved running events, perfectly blending the physical challenge of racing with the beauty of one of the world's most famous wine-growing landscapes. The event headquarters is Castelnuovo Berardenga, a town in the province of Siena in the heart of the Sienese Chianti, from where the routes wind through hills, vineyards, olive groves, and woods.
This is not just a simple road race: it is a three-day event that celebrates the local territory, its traditions, and its products. This is why the event is known as a "slow" race, where the stopwatch shares the stage with the desire to look around and breathe in the Tuscan countryside.
The competitive program, concentrated mainly on Sunday, offers various distances designed for every level of preparation:
The 42 km route is famous for passing through some of the most renowned estates in the area, such as Poggio Bonelli, Castello di Bossi, San Felice, Villa a Sesta, Castello di Brolio, Tenuta di Arceno, and Fรจlsina: running here means having the very vineyards that create Chianti Classico right before your eyes.
The EcoMarathon is also designed for those who aren't racing. The non-competitive EcoWalks (covering distances of approximately 7, 15, and 19 km) allow you to experience the same landscapes at a walker's pace, while the 6-Legged EcoWalk is dedicated to those who want to participate with their dog. Among the most popular appointments is "Emotions in the Wineries," a food and wine tour that takes you from estate to estate to taste the wines and flavors of Tuscan tradition.
The event is organized by Polisportiva La Bulletta and Torre del Mangia and attracts thousands of participants from all over Italy and numerous foreign countries every year. In addition to the races, the program includes technical briefings, social gatherings, and the classic "third half" with a final pasta party. It is the perfect opportunity to discover Castelnuovo Berardenga and the Sienese Chianti during the autumn season, when the hills are painted with the colors of the grape harvest.
The 19th Chianti Classico EcoMarathon returns from October 16th to 18th, 2026, in Castelnuovo Berardenga (Siena). A complete weekend alternating competitive races, scenic walks, and food and wine experiences in the heart of Chianti Classico. Registration opens in the spring of 2026 on the endu.net platform, with fees increasing progressively until the event date.
At the end of the races, the classic "third half" with a pasta party for all participants.
Castelnuovo Berardenga is located in the province of Siena and can be reached by car from the Siena-Bettolle junction (Sinalunga or Siena Est exits) and the SS73 road. The reference train station is Siena, from which you can continue by car or local bus services.
Registration for competitive races and walks is done online (via the endu.net platform). Fees vary based on the chosen distance and increase as the date approaches: it is advisable to register in advance. For updated information, please check the official website.
The routes feature significant elevation changes on dirt roads and trails: trail running shoes are recommended. In October, the weather is mild but variable: it is best to bring technical gear. There are numerous accommodation facilities (farmhouses and wineries) in the surroundings to turn the race into a weekend in Chianti.
