About Chianti EcoMarathon

A full weekend of sport, scenery, and Tuscan flavors: the Chianti Classico EcoMarathon draws thousands of runners to race through the rows of vines, forests, and prestigious wineries of the Chianti region, starting and finishing in Castelnuovo Berardenga, in the province of Siena. Featuring a 42 km marathon, a half-marathon, a 15 km trail, a relay race, and non-competitive walks open to everyone (including dogs), this event is above all a way to experience the Sienese countryside.

A marathon in the heart of Chianti Classico

The Chianti Classico EcoMarathon is one of Tuscany's most beloved running events, perfectly blending the physical challenge of racing with the beauty of one of the world's most famous wine-growing landscapes. The event headquarters is Castelnuovo Berardenga, a town in the province of Siena in the heart of the Sienese Chianti, from where the routes wind through hills, vineyards, olive groves, and woods.

This is not just a simple road race: it is a three-day event that celebrates the local territory, its traditions, and its products. This is why the event is known as a "slow" race, where the stopwatch shares the stage with the desire to look around and breathe in the Tuscan countryside.

Competitive races

The competitive program, concentrated mainly on Sunday, offers various distances designed for every level of preparation:

  • EcoMarathon โ€” 42 km with approximately 1,180 meters of elevation gain, the flagship route that runs through the most prestigious wineries of Chianti Classico.
  • EcoHalf-Marathon โ€” 21 km with approximately 490 meters of elevation gain, a half-marathon through vineyards and clay hills.
  • Between Woods and Vineyards โ€” 15 km with approximately 350 meters of elevation gain, the shortest and most accessible trail.
  • 3ร—1500 Relay โ€” the team event that kicks off the weekend.

The 42 km route is famous for passing through some of the most renowned estates in the area, such as Poggio Bonelli, Castello di Bossi, San Felice, Villa a Sesta, Castello di Brolio, Tenuta di Arceno, and Fรจlsina: running here means having the very vineyards that create Chianti Classico right before your eyes.

Beyond competition: walks and flavors

The EcoMarathon is also designed for those who aren't racing. The non-competitive EcoWalks (covering distances of approximately 7, 15, and 19 km) allow you to experience the same landscapes at a walker's pace, while the 6-Legged EcoWalk is dedicated to those who want to participate with their dog. Among the most popular appointments is "Emotions in the Wineries," a food and wine tour that takes you from estate to estate to taste the wines and flavors of Tuscan tradition.

A community weekend

The event is organized by Polisportiva La Bulletta and Torre del Mangia and attracts thousands of participants from all over Italy and numerous foreign countries every year. In addition to the races, the program includes technical briefings, social gatherings, and the classic "third half" with a final pasta party. It is the perfect opportunity to discover Castelnuovo Berardenga and the Sienese Chianti during the autumn season, when the hills are painted with the colors of the grape harvest.
