Molfetta's civic vow to the Madonna dei Martiri, renewed every May 11th since 1560
The Medonne du Tremelizze Festival—meaning "Madonna of the Earthquake" in the Molfettese dialect—is one of the most ancient and deeply felt devotional traditions in Molfetta, a city on the Adriatic coast in the Metropolitan City of Bari, Puglia. Its origins trace back to May 11, 1560, when a powerful earthquake struck Southern Italy, leaving a trail of destruction. According to tradition, Molfetta was spared; the community attributed its survival to the intercession of the Madonna dei Martiri and made a civic vow to hold a solemn commemoration on that same date every year. The promise has been kept unbroken ever since.
At the heart of the festival is the venerated icon of the Madonna dei Martiri, a wooden image of Byzantine tradition that arrived in Molfetta during the Middle Ages, linked to the cult of crusaders and pilgrims buried in the city. Housed in the Basilica Pontificia Minore Madonna dei Martiri on the seafront, the image is the object of profound devotion. In 1951, Pope Pius XII proclaimed the Madonna dei Martiri co-patroness of Molfetta and the diocese, and the icon was solemnly crowned. The May "Medonne du Tremelizze" is distinct from the great patronal festival in September, famous for its evocative "sea procession," yet it shares the same sacred image and identity-defining bond.
The highlight of the festivities is the procession of the icon, which travels through the city center on the afternoon of May 11th, accompanied by the Bassa Musica "Città di Molfetta" band. The religious pageant involves the faithful, confraternities, and civil authorities, blending sacred and secular elements in a way that reflects the very nature of the vow: not just an act of faith, but a commitment made by the entire community. The day culminates in a Eucharistic Celebration presided over by the Bishop, during which the symbolic gesture of offering oil and lighting the votive lamp that burns before the Madonna's image is renewed.
In 2026, the festival marked the 466th anniversary of the vow and was hosted, as an extraordinary measure, by the parish of Sant'Achille, which was celebrating its fiftieth anniversary. The icon was moved from the Basilica to the church of Sant'Achille for an extensive program of celebrations, catechesis, and meetings from May 6th to 11th, engaging schools, families, and local youth before returning in procession to the seaside Basilica.
Participating in the Medonne du Tremelizze means connecting with the most authentic soul of Molfetta: a community that has honored a promise for over 460 years, passing it down from generation to generation. Amidst the sound of the band, the scent of wax, and streets filled with the faithful, the festival tells the story of the unbreakable bond between the people of Molfetta and their Madonna, the city's guardian and protector.
In 2026, the Medonne du Tremelizze Festival took on special significance: the 466th anniversary of the civic vow intertwined with the jubilee of the fifty years of the parish of Sant'Achille, which hosted the icon of the Madonna dei Martiri for the entire week of festivities. The image was transferred in procession from the Basilica on May 6th and returned to the seaside Basilica on May 11th, the day of the anniversary. The program alternated Eucharistic celebrations, catechesis sessions for local schools, meetings for youth and families, and the traditional candlelight procession, renewing the city's devotion to its patroness.
The celebrations take place in the center of Molfetta (Metropolitan City of Bari, Puglia), between the Basilica Pontificia Minore Madonna dei Martiri on the seafront and the city parishes. The May 11th procession travels through the city streets to the Basilica.
By train: Molfetta station on the Adriatic line (Bari-Foggia), just minutes from the center. By car: Molfetta exit on the SS16 bis highway. Nearest airport: Bari-Palese "Karol Wojtyła," approximately 25 km away.
All celebrations and the procession are open to the public and free of charge.
