The Marian devotion of Molfetta's sailors at the Church of San Pietro
In the heart of the historic center of Molfetta, a city in the Metropolitan City of Bari overlooking the Adriatic, the Baroque Church of San Pietro has housed the statue of Our Lady of Mount Carmel for over two centuries. It is here that every July the Confraternity of Maria Santissima del Carmelo renews the Solemn Celebrations in honor of the Madonna, one of the most deeply felt devotions by the Molfetta seafaring community.
The wooden statue, the work of Neapolitan sculptor Giuseppe Verzella, depicts the Virgin holding the Child with one arm and showing the scapular with the other. Purchased by the Confraternity in 1827, it has always been the center of a devotion born, according to tradition, in 1812, when fishermen from the ancient port allegedly heard a voice saying, "Continue my devotion, I am the star of the sea." From that episode, the Confraternity of Carmine was born in 1813, which still keeps the cult alive today.
The festivities unfold over nearly two weeks in July, blending liturgical moments with popular ones. After the solemn enthronement of the statue, the preparatory novena accompanies the faithful until July 16, the day of the liturgical solemnity of Carmel. There is no shortage of typical features of a Puglian festival: the bassa musica (traditional folk band) that travels through the city streets announcing the festivities, brass bands, artistic lighting of the squares, and the traditional hot-air balloon that reproduces the image of the Madonna and is launched into the sky over the historic center.
The bond with the sea remains very strong: during the itinerant procession, a stop is made at the Monument to the Fallen of the Sea, on the Banchina Seminario, in a moment of reflection that recalls Molfetta's seafaring vocation and the protective role attributed to the Madonna del Carmine by sailors.
The most anticipated moment is the solemn city procession, when the statue of the Blessed Virgin crosses the main streets of the historic center accompanied by bands, confraternities, and parish associations. The event concludes with the traditional fireworks display that illuminates the seafront, sealing a festival that is both a religious rite and a major identity-defining event for Molfetta and the entire Adriatic coast of Puglia.
The Confraternity of Carmine leads nearly two weeks of celebrations in the Church of San Pietro again in 2026. Alongside the liturgical moments of the novena, the edition features the peregrinatio of the relics of Saint Thérèse of the Child Jesus, a high-level Marian concert, and the traditional signs of the Molfetta popular festival: folk music, hot-air balloon, and fireworks. The procession of the statue on Saturday, July 18, with multiple bands and city confraternities, is the climax of the event.
The celebrations take place in the Church of San Pietro, in the historic center of Molfetta (Metropolitan City of Bari, Puglia). The procession and fireworks display affect the streets of the center and the city seafront.
Molfetta is served by the railway station on the Adriatic line (Bari-Foggia) and by the SS16 road. The historic center is a few minutes' walk from the station; on the days of the procession, some streets are closed to traffic.
All celebrations, the procession, and the fireworks display are free and open to everyone.
