The Reginae Martyrum Historical Pageant is one of the most evocative and popular re-enactments in Molfetta, located in the Metropolitan City of Bari, Puglia. Created to bring the history and faith of the Molfetta people to life, the procession winds through the city center at sunset, featuring dozens of participants in period attire, flag-wavers, musicians, nobles, and commoners in a blend of tradition, spirituality, and spectacle.

The History: The Arrival of the Icon of the Madonna dei Martiri

The event is a re-enactment of the arrival in Molfetta of the Icon of the Madonna dei Martiri, the venerated Byzantine image traditionally linked to Crusaders returning from the Holy Land. The Madonna dei Martiri is the city's spiritual protector, and her Basilica, overlooking the sea along Viale dei Crociati, has guarded this devotion for centuries. The symbolic heart of the pageant is, as tradition dictates, the landing of the Icon: a moment filled with spirituality, memory, and a sense of belonging that unites the community.

The Procession Through the City Center

The parade begins at Piazza Margherita di Savoia and winds through the main streets of the historic center, reaching Largo Madonna dei Martiri, near the Basilica. Along the route, participants animate scenes of period life, while historical groups from across Puglia and beyond enrich the procession with meticulously detailed costumes, drums, flags, and theatrical performances.

The event is promoted by APS Melphicta nel Passato, in collaboration with the Basilica Madonna dei Martiri and the Lega Navale Italiana - Molfetta Section. The association works every year to refine the historical accuracy, costumes, and organization, involving an increasing number of participants and historical groups.
