About Medievalia

Medievalia is the historical re-enactment that brings the village of Castel di Lucio, in the Nebrodi mountains of Messina, back to the era of the Ventimiglia family every summer. For one day, the historic center transforms into a medieval village bustling with costumed performers, craft markets, archery, falconers with their birds of prey, and traveling shows. The highlight is the historical pageant that winds through the town streets up to the ruins of the Ventimigliano Castle, accompanied by flag-wavers and musicians. A free and evocative journey through time in the heart of inland Sicily.

Medievalia, a dive into the Sicilian Middle Ages

Medievalia is the medieval historical re-enactment of Castel di Lucio, a small village in the Nebrodi mountains in the province of Messina, Sicily. For one day, the entire historic center dresses in period attire, welcoming residents and visitors into an atmosphere that recalls life in the Middle Ages, when the town was a strategic control point over the Tusa river valley.

The village and the Ventimiglia family

The origins of Castel di Lucio date back to the Norman period, with the formation of the ancient Castelluzzo core. The village gained particular importance under the lordship of the powerful Ventimiglia family, who turned it into a strategic stronghold. The re-enactment is inspired by this very era: the costumed historical pageant retraces the history of the Ventimiglia family and culminates at the ruins of the Ventimigliano Castle, which still dominates the town today.

The medieval village

The heart of the event is the medieval village set up among the town's squares and streets. Activities and shows enlivening the day include:

  • an archery range open to the public;
  • falconry displays with flight demonstrations of birds of prey;
  • exhibitions featuring snakes and other animals;
  • performances by flag-wavers and musicians from the City of Caccamo, along with medieval music groups;
  • craft markets, ancient trades, and tastings.

The historical pageant

The main event is the historical pageant: nobles, ladies, soldiers, and commoners in costume parade along the historic center of Castel di Lucio up to the castle, bringing the image of the medieval village to life. The natural scenery of the town, perched on a rocky spur, makes the re-enactment particularly evocative at dusk.

A village focused on culture and art

Castel di Lucio is also known for its dedication to contemporary art, with works and installations that have transformed the town into a kind of open-air museum. Medievalia is part of this effort to promote the historical and cultural identity of the municipality and is supported by public funding under the PNRR – NextGenerationEU.

The event is free to attend and is one of the most cherished summer appointments in the Castel di Lucio calendar, attracting visitors from across the entire Nebrodi region.

Medievalia — edition 2026

Medievalia returns to Castel di Lucio in the summer of 2026 with a new edition of the medieval historical re-enactment dedicated to the Ventimiglia era. Tourism sources place the event in June 2026, but the exact date and detailed program have not yet been officially announced. As usual, the medieval village, the costumed historical pageant towards the Ventimigliano Castle, and the flag-waving and falconry shows are expected.

Medievalia 2026 in Castel di Lucio is scheduled for the summer, with references to June 2026 in the first tourist reports. At the moment, the exact date and the 2026 program have not yet been announced by the organizers. The edition is expected to feature the established formula of the medieval historical re-enactment in the Nebrodi village: medieval village, markets, archery, bird of prey displays, and the costumed historical pageant up to the ruins of the Ventimigliano Castle. For final dates and program, we recommend following the official channels of the Municipality and the Pro Loco of Castel di Lucio.
