The medieval historical re-enactment in the village of the Nebrodi mountains
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
Medievalia is the medieval historical re-enactment of Castel di Lucio, a small village in the Nebrodi mountains in the province of Messina, Sicily. For one day, the entire historic center dresses in period attire, welcoming residents and visitors into an atmosphere that recalls life in the Middle Ages, when the town was a strategic control point over the Tusa river valley.
The origins of Castel di Lucio date back to the Norman period, with the formation of the ancient Castelluzzo core. The village gained particular importance under the lordship of the powerful Ventimiglia family, who turned it into a strategic stronghold. The re-enactment is inspired by this very era: the costumed historical pageant retraces the history of the Ventimiglia family and culminates at the ruins of the Ventimigliano Castle, which still dominates the town today.
The heart of the event is the medieval village set up among the town's squares and streets. Activities and shows enlivening the day include:
The main event is the historical pageant: nobles, ladies, soldiers, and commoners in costume parade along the historic center of Castel di Lucio up to the castle, bringing the image of the medieval village to life. The natural scenery of the town, perched on a rocky spur, makes the re-enactment particularly evocative at dusk.
Castel di Lucio is also known for its dedication to contemporary art, with works and installations that have transformed the town into a kind of open-air museum. Medievalia is part of this effort to promote the historical and cultural identity of the municipality and is supported by public funding under the PNRR – NextGenerationEU.
The event is free to attend and is one of the most cherished summer appointments in the Castel di Lucio calendar, attracting visitors from across the entire Nebrodi region.
Medievalia 2026 in Castel di Lucio is scheduled for the summer, with references to June 2026 in the first tourist reports. At the moment, the exact date and the 2026 program have not yet been announced by the organizers. The edition is expected to feature the established formula of the medieval historical re-enactment in the Nebrodi village: medieval village, markets, archery, bird of prey displays, and the costumed historical pageant up to the ruins of the Ventimigliano Castle. For final dates and program, we recommend following the official channels of the Municipality and the Pro Loco of Castel di Lucio.
Castel di Lucio is located in the Nebrodi mountains, in the province of Messina. By car, from the A20 Messina-Palermo motorway, take the Tusa or Santo Stefano di Camastra exit and continue inland; the nearest train station is Santo Stefano di Camastra-Mistretta on the Tyrrhenian line, from which you can reach the village by car.
Admission to the re-enactment is free. Activities take place in the historic center and near the Ventimigliano Castle, generally in the late afternoon and evening.
We recommend wearing comfortable shoes for the cobblestone streets of the village and checking for dates and the updated program with the Municipality and the Pro Loco of Castel di Lucio.
