Solemnity of Christ the King

A festival of faith in the Nebrodi mountains

In Mistretta, a charming mountain village in the Nebrodi range in the province of Messina (Sicily), the Solemnity of Christ the King of the Universe is one of the most significant moments in the town's religious calendar. The festival is celebrated on the last Sunday of the liturgical year, just before Advent, transforming the ancient streets of the historic center into a path of devotion, light, and communal participation.

The float and the processions

The heart of the celebration is the majestic processional float housing the statue of Christ the King, kept in the Church of the SS. Rosario, part of the Santa Lucia parish. On Saturday, the statue is carried in procession to the Sanctuary of the Madonna dei Miracoli, venerated as the Queen of the Nebrodi. On Sunday, the day of the solemnity, the procession travels through the main town streets accompanied by hymns and prayers in an atmosphere of deep reflection.

Traditions and characteristic moments

Along the processional route, traditional rites deeply rooted in local culture are renewed, such as the evocative vutata di San Vincenzo (the turning of Saint Vincent) and the characteristic light displays that illuminate the passage of the float. The festival concludes with the Act of Consecration to the Sacred Heart and the Eucharistic blessing, moments that crown the entire weekend of festivities.

Alongside the liturgical dimension, the Festival Committee enriches the program with musical events at the Cineteatro Falcone-Borsellino in Mistretta, which over the years has hosted Sicilian artists and orchestras specializing in Italian folk traditions. The festival thus becomes a meeting point for the entire Municipality of Mistretta, uniting faith passed down through generations with the conviviality and identity of one of the most fascinating villages in the Nebrodi.
