The pork festival bringing the historic center of Villafranca d'Asti to life
Every spring, the historic center of Villafranca d'Asti, a small town in the Province of Asti overlooking the Valtriversa valley, fills with aromas and crowds for Maiale d'Autore, the gastronomic festival celebrating one of the most beloved ingredients in Piedmontese cuisine. For three days, the streets around the Town Hall become a large open-air food court, where the rural traditions of Monferrato meet the creativity of volunteer chefs.
The heart of the event is the collaboration between the five Pro Loco associations of the Valtriversa — Villafranca, Maretto, Cantarana, Roatto, and San Paolo Solbrito — which together offer around thirty themed dishes. The menu ranges from pepperonata with sausage to potato gnocchi with toma cheese and speck, from pork tonnato to pork rinds with beans, as well as tagliatelle with meat sauce and homemade desserts. This variety showcases how pork has always been the star of the table in these parts, from the most ancient recipes to modern interpretations.
Tastings of meats and cured products are accompanied by local DOC wines, selected in collaboration with the Barbera d'Asti Consortium and as part of the Vininvilla competition. The festival also serves as a preview for Monferrato On Stage, the event series bringing concerts and DJ sets to the town square: among the most anticipated names is Luca Martelli, the legendary drummer for Litfiba and Piero Pelù, with his "Ride Gorilla" show.
Beyond the food, Maiale d'Autore offers a nature walk with the Legambiente Valtriversa circle, creative workshops on ceramics and wood restyling, and in-depth sessions on local products. The program is designed to engage families, food and wine enthusiasts, and curious visitors alike, all within an authentically festive village atmosphere.
