The pilgrimage and patronal festival of Calimera in the heart of Grecìa Salentina
The Madonna di Roca Festival is the most cherished event in Calimera, a small town in the province of Lecce, located in the heart of Grecìa Salentina—the inland area of Salento where the Griko language, of ancient Greek origin, still survives. Every year, at the beginning of May, the community gathers around its patron saint in a blend of faith, historical memory, and popular celebration that involves the entire town.
The heart of the festival is the walking pilgrimage that, at dawn on the first Saturday of May, sets off from the Mother Church of Calimera toward the Sanctuary of Madonna di Roca, overlooking the Adriatic Sea about fifteen kilometers away, near San Foca and Roca Vecchia. Devotees walk through the Salento countryside to reach the site of their origins, where Holy Mass is celebrated. It is a journey of devotion but also an identity-defining ritual, renewing the deep bond between Calimera and its sanctuary on the coast every year.
The tradition has its roots in the 16th century. According to popular memory, the ancient coastal city of Roca Vecchia was abandoned and destroyed due to Turkish raids, and its inhabitants scattered into the inland villages, giving rise to the current towns of Calimera, Vernole, Melendugno, and Borgagne. Since then, every spring, the communities descended from those refugees return on a pilgrimage to their city of origin: this is why the festival is celebrated not only in Calimera but also in the other towns, which take turns between the end of April and the first Sundays of May.
Alongside the religious program, the festival explodes with civic festivities. The streets of the town light up with artistic illuminations, while Piazza del Sole resonates with concerts by brass bands and evening musical performances. There is no shortage of fireworks accompanying the procession and, on Sunday, the traditional street fair with stalls, local products, handicrafts, and street food. It is the moment when the entire community and visitors from neighboring towns gather in the streets of Calimera.
Visiting the Madonna di Roca Festival is also an opportunity to discover Calimera and Grecìa Salentina, a land of ancient olive trees, dry-stone walls, and age-old traditions. The very name of the town, which in Griko means "good morning," tells of a cultural heritage unique to Italy. The patronal festival is the ideal gateway to this authentic corner of Puglia, where the sacred and the popular have coexisted for centuries.
The 2026 Madonna di Roca Festival in Calimera renewed the tradition with two days of celebrations, Saturday, May 2, and Sunday, May 3, following the start of the religious program in the second half of April. The walking pilgrimage to the Sanctuary of Roca, the evening procession, brass band concerts in Piazza del Sole, fireworks, and the traditional fair animated the town, involving devotees and visitors from across the Grecìa Salentina.
Throughout the festivities, the streets of the center are decorated with artistic illuminations.
Calimera is located in the province of Lecce, about 15 km from the provincial capital. By car, it can be reached via the SS16 or the provincial roads connecting Lecce to Grecìa Salentina. The nearest train station is served by the Ferrovie del Sud Est on the Lecce-Otranto line.
The festival takes place on the first weekend of May. The religious program generally begins in the final days of April, with the pilgrimage to the sanctuary on the first Saturday and the fair on the first Sunday of the month.
For those wishing to participate in the walking pilgrimage to the sanctuary of Roca, comfortable shoes and an early morning departure are recommended. The fair and performances are free to attend. For updated schedules, it is advisable to check the website of the Municipality of Calimera.
