Devotion to the Physician Saints in the heart of Salento

Every year, at the end of September, the village of Muro Leccese, in the province of Lecce, renews its ancient devotion to Saints Cosmas and Damian. According to tradition, the two saints were 4th-century physician brothers who treated the sick without asking for payment, until they were martyred under the Roman proconsul Lysias in the city of Aegea. Their cult, which arrived from the East through Puglia—a land that has always served as a bridge between East and West—took deep root in Salento, where the two brothers are venerated as protectors of health.
In Muro Leccese, the festival revolves around the Chapel of the Physician Saints, built in 1872 on the ruins of a previous sacred building. Popular tradition tells of a seriously ill local child who was miraculously healed through the intercession of the saints; for this reason, the statue venerated by the locals depicts a child at its center. A Salento saying still summarizes the spirit of this devotion today: "My Physician Saints, grant me health of body and soul."
The festivities traditionally span three days, from September 26th to 28th, and are preceded by a novena of preparation that begins in the middle of the month. The religious portion includes holy masses, the novena, and the solemn procession carrying the statue of the saints through the village streets, accompanied by numerous devotees. A particularly poignant moment is the mass dedicated to the sick, followed by a community lunch.
Alongside the sacred dimension, the festival expresses all the vibrancy of Salento's patronal feasts. The historic center and Piazza del Popolo light up with artistic luminarie (light displays), often animated by light shows synchronized to music. The days are marked by brass band concerts hosted in the traditional bandstand, pop music shows that get the whole square dancing, and conclude with a fireworks display that illuminates the Salento sky. Stalls, sweets, and local products complete the atmosphere of this festival that unites the entire community of Muro Leccese.
The Feast of the Physician Saints is one of the most defining events in the local calendar and a key piece of the rich tradition of patronal festivals in the province of Lecce and all of Puglia.
