The spring feast of the co-patron saint of Peschici, protector of sailors and aviators
In Peschici, in the province of Foggia, in the heart of the Apulian Gargano, the Madonna di Loreto Festival represents one of the oldest and most beloved religious traditions of the village. The Virgin of Loreto is the co-patron saint of the city, revered as the protector of sailors and aviators: a devotion rooted in the maritime culture of this community overlooking the Adriatic, which has been tied to fishing and emigration for centuries.
Popular tradition tells of a ship caught in a violent storm off the Gargano coast. A mysterious light appeared on the shore, guiding the crew to safety. Once ashore, the captain discovered a small cave with a lit lamp and an image of the Madonna di Loreto. To fulfill a vow made during the storm, he had a church built on that spot. Since then, the small sanctuary, nestled in a pine forest about two kilometers from the town center, has been a place of pilgrimage and houses numerous maritime votive offerings: models of boats and sailing ships, oars, nautical instruments, and even airplanes, donated by fishermen and emigrants who survived their journeys.
The central moment is the solemn procession that, in the morning, moves from the Mother Church towards the sanctuary. The confraternities of Purgatorio and Sacramento accompany the statues of the town's saints along with the statue of the Madonna di Loreto, in a long parade of the faithful that crosses the historic center and the paths leading to the pine forest. Along the way, the traditional firework display is a must, while in the afternoon, the return procession brings the Madonna back to the Mother Church.
In the sanctuary, the Madonna and Child are crowned with two gold crowns created by goldsmith Giovanna Iervolino, enriched with symbols of the territory: red corals recalling the 2007 fire, green jade representing the Foresta Umbra, and pearls symbolizing the sea and the title of Star of the Sea. The festival is also a gastronomic occasion: the families of Peschici prepare typical Easter sweets called can'strillรซ (or canistredd'), basket-shaped dough with an egg in the center, along with panettelle and culace.
Experiencing the Madonna di Loreto Festival also means discovering Peschici, with its white cubic houses clinging to the cliff, the alleys of the historic center, the characteristic trabucchi (fishing platforms), and the beaches of the Gargano National Park. A festival that combines faith, maritime identity, and hospitality in one of the most evocative villages in Puglia.
The 2026 edition of the Madonna di Loreto Festival in Peschici was scheduled for Monday, April 13, the Monday following Easter Monday. Due to a yellow alert for strong to gale-force winds issued by the regional Civil Protection department, the organizers decided to postpone the festival to Monday, April 20, 2026, to ensure the safety of participants. The postponement was agreed upon by the Municipality of Peschici, the Festival Committee, the Sant'Elia Profeta Parish, and the Sant'Antonio di Padova Parish.
The festival took place with the same program as planned: in the morning, after the mass in the Mother Church, the solemn procession accompanied the statue of the Madonna and the statues of the saints towards the sanctuary in the pine forest, with the Eucharistic celebration; in the afternoon, the return procession brought the Virgin back to the Mother Church, amidst mortar fire and the traditional firework display.
Festival postponed from April 13 to April 20, 2026, due to weather alert.
The rites are celebrated in the historic center of Peschici (Mother Church) and at the Sanctuary of the Madonna di Loreto, located in the pine forest about 2 km from the town, in the province of Foggia (Puglia).
The festival falls on the Monday following Easter Monday, with celebrations on the preceding Sunday and Monday. Dates may be subject to change in case of adverse weather conditions.
By car: from the A14 motorway, take the Poggio Imperiale or San Severo exit, then the SS693 and SS89 towards the Gargano. By train: Foggia or San Severo stations, continuing by bus (Ferrovie del Gargano) to Peschici. Nearest airport: Bari or Foggia (Gino Lisa).
Wear comfortable shoes for the procession along the paths to the sanctuary. Spring is the ideal season to combine the festival with a visit to the historic center and the beaches of the Gargano.
