Five days of faith, tradition, and entertainment in Torremaggiore
The Madonna della Fontana Festival is the most anticipated and deeply felt celebration by the community of Torremaggiore, a town in the Alto Tavoliere of the Province of Foggia, in the Apulia region. Every year, during the Easter season, the town gathers around the venerated statue of Maria SS. della Fontana for five days that blend religious and civil dimensions, featuring ancient rites, music, and major public events.
Marian devotion here is deeply rooted in local tradition and linked to the town's Sanctuary, which houses the statue of the Virgin, a constant destination for the faithful. The connection to water and the Contrada Pacicco, where the festival experiences some of its most evocative moments, makes this cult a core identity element for the entire community, passed down from generation to generation by families, associations, and local parishes.
The festival begins with the enthronement of the statue in the Sanctuary, the presentation of crowns by the municipal administration, and the lighting of dazzling illuminations that transform the town center. The religious heart of the event consists of solemn processions, accompanied by brass bands and traditional fireworks displays (batterie), which wind through the city streets amidst the participation of the faithful.
Alongside religious rites, the Fontana Festival is famous for its rich program of entertainment. Every evening, Piazza Incoronazione hosts concerts by nationally renowned artists, DJ sets, and entertainment, while the sky over Torremaggiore lights up with impressive fireworks and pyromusical shows, often held in Contrada Pacicco, concluding the evenings just before midnight.
Experiencing the Madonna della Fontana Festival means discovering Torremaggiore and the Capitanata territory, a land of wheat, wine, and oil in the Alto Tavoliere. The event, organized by the Maria SS. della Fontana Festival Committee with the contribution of families, businesses, associations, and parishes, is an opportunity to savor Apulian hospitality and the authenticity of a community that renews its commitment to faith and tradition every spring.
The 2026 edition opened on Sunday, April 5, with the enthronement of the Maria SS. della Fontana statue in the town Sanctuary, the presentation of crowns by Mayor Emilio Di Pumpo, and the lighting of the illuminations, followed by a performance by the folk group "Cantori Paesani" and the "Emozioni" concert by Gianmarco Carroccia.
Easter Monday was dedicated to the traditional blessing of vehicles, a fireworks display, and a concert by Rosario Miraggio. Solemn processions crossed the city on Tuesday, April 7 (9:30 AM) and Wednesday, April 8 (11:30 AM), accompanied by brass bands and traditional fireworks. The grand finale on Thursday, April 9, featured a concert by LDA & AKA 7EVEN in Piazza Incoronazione, followed by a pyromusical show with a Bolognese-style battery in Contrada Pacicco.
Torremaggiore is located in the Alto Tavoliere, in the province of Foggia. By car, it can be reached via the A14 motorway (Poggio Imperiale or San Severo exit) and the SS 16 state road. The nearest train station is in San Severo, on the Bologna-Bari-Lecce line, which is connected by bus.
The festival takes place every year during the Easter period, between late March and April. Processions, concerts, and pyromusical shows are held in the town center, between the Sanctuary, Piazza Incoronazione, and Contrada Pacicco.
Participation in processions, public concerts, and fireworks displays is free.
