About Stella Maris Feast

Every Ferragosto, Marina di Lesina on the Gargano coast in the province of Foggia celebrates its patron saint, Maria Santissima Stella Maris, the Madonna del Mare (Our Lady of the Sea), protector of fishermen and sailors. On August 14th and 15th, the seaside village gathers around the statue carried in procession through the streets and out on the water, amidst solemn Masses, brass band concerts, folklore, illuminations, and a midnight fireworks display over the sea. A popular Apulian festival that weaves together devotion, maritime identity, and summer joy.

The patronal feast of Marina di Lesina

The Stella Maris Patronal Feast is the most cherished event of the summer in Marina di Lesina, the seaside district of the town of Lesina, on the northern coast of the Gargano in the province of Foggia, Apulia. In the heart of Ferragosto, the maritime community rallies around its patron saint, Maria Santissima Stella Maris, the Madonna del Mare, venerated as the guide and protector of those who live by fishing and the sea.

Devotion and the sea

The title Stella Maris, "Star of the Sea," is among the oldest Marian appellations linked to navigation: for a fishing village overlooking the lagoon and the Adriatic, it represents a spiritual heritage passed down from generation to generation. The Stella Maris parish in Marina di Lesina preserves and brings this tradition to life, attracting residents, vacationers, and families of Lesina origin who return for the summer every year.

The most anticipated moment: the sea procession

The heart of the festival is the evocative sea procession: the statue of the Virgin is placed on a boat and taken along the coast, often departing from the area of the Punta Pietre Nere Sailing Club, followed by a procession of decorated vessels. The return to land then turns into a procession through the village streets, accompanied by a brass band, prayers, and the liturgical chants of the faithful.

Religious rites and popular festivities

The program alternates between the sacred and the festive. Solemn Masses and pontifical celebrations are joined by:

  • brass band concerts featuring sacred and popular music;
  • folklore shows, traditional songs, and dances;
  • artistic illuminations that light up the village streets and squares;
  • food stalls with local products and fresh local fish;
  • the grand midnight fireworks display, with the lights reflecting on the sea.

Community organization

The event is organized by the Stella Maris Patronal Feast Committee together with the Pro Loco Lesina Marina APS, an expression of volunteer work fueled by enthusiasm and devotion. Their commitment provides Marina di Lesina with two days of reflection and celebration each year that unite the entire community.

Why attend

Those visiting the Gargano during Ferragosto will find the Stella Maris Feast to be an authentic opportunity to discover the maritime soul of the Capitanata region: a local Apulian festival far from mass tourism circuits, where popular faith, the sea, and hospitality intertwine in a simple and engaging atmosphere.

Stella Maris Feast — edition 2026

Marina di Lesina prepares to renew its devotion to its patron saint, Maria Santissima Stella Maris, in 2026. The dates for the 2026 edition have not yet been officially announced: following tradition, the festival is expected to take place around Ferragosto, featuring the sea procession, solemn Masses, brass band concerts, and fireworks on the Gargano coast. The program will be published by the Stella Maris Patronal Feast Committee and the Pro Loco Lesina Marina APS in the weeks leading up to the event.

The 2026 edition of the Stella Maris Patronal Feast in Marina di Lesina is expected during the Ferragosto period, in accordance with the custom that sees the maritime community celebrate the Madonna del Mare in the middle of August. At the moment, the official dates and the detailed program have not yet been published.

As per tradition, the event should include the sea procession of the statue, the procession through the village streets with the band, religious celebrations, and the evening fireworks display.
