The Winter Celebrations of Saint Ruggero the Bishop are one of the most cherished events of the year for the city of Barletta, in the province of Barletta-Andria-Trani, Puglia. Every year, in the final days of December, the municipality and the church community gather to honor the patron saint, whose liturgical solemnity is celebrated on December 30th. This winter recurrence of the cult—distinct from the spring festivities linked to the translation of the relics—coincides with the dies natalis of the Saint according to the Roman Martyrology.
Ruggero of Canne (Canne, c. 1060 – December 30, 1129) was the bishop of the ancient city of Canne, not far from Barletta. He led his homeland following the painful destruction wrought by the Normans under Robert Guiscard in 1083, supporting his fellow citizens with the comforts of faith and material aid during the reconstruction. Venerated as a saint, he is the patron of Barletta and the Archdiocese of Trani-Barletta-Bisceglie. His venerated remains were moved to Barletta on April 27, 1276, first to the Cathedral of Santa Maria Maggiore and later to the Benedictine monastery church, which has since been known as the Church of San Ruggero. Iconography depicts him in pontifical vestments, with a miter and crozier, surmounted by an eagle in flight, according to an ancient legend linked to a pilgrimage toward the Gargano.
The heart of the celebrations is the monastic Church of San Ruggero on Via Enrico Cialdini, cared for by the community of Benedictine nuns. For several days, the church hosts a packed schedule of Holy Masses, animated in turn by various local parishes and church groups, with the participation of civil and military authorities. Particularly moving moments include the prayer vigil for young people promoted by the Youth Ministry and the extraordinary opening of the Monastery of San Ruggero, which houses the «Ora et Labora» cultural workshop.
The main day is December 30th, the liturgical solemnity of the Saint. The morning is marked by numerous Eucharistic celebrations, including a Mass concelebrated by priests named Ruggero and the solemn Pontifical Mass presided over by the Archbishop. In the evening, the city joins the procession with the Saint's effigy through the streets of the center. The secular festivities culminate with a fireworks display on the picturesque Litoranea di Ponente, near the port, and the concert by the Grande Orchestra di Fiati «Città di Barletta» in Piazzetta Mons. Damato.
Between the fading lights of Christmas and the anticipation of the new year, the Winter Celebrations of Saint Ruggero represent a moment of strong cohesion for Barletta: a blend of spirituality, historical memory, brass band music, and popular celebration that renews the city's deep bond with its protector every year.
The Winter Celebrations of Saint Ruggero the Bishop return to Barletta in late December 2026 to celebrate the patron saint of the city and the Archdiocese of Trani-Barletta-Bisceglie, whose liturgical solemnity falls on December 30th.
At the moment, the official dates and the program for the 2026 edition have not yet been announced. Based on tradition, several days of celebrations are expected in the monastic Church of San Ruggero, the procession with the Saint's effigy through the city streets, the fireworks display on the Litoranea di Ponente, and the concert by the Grande Orchestra di Fiati «Città di Barletta». The detailed calendar will be released by the Archdiocese and the parish in the weeks preceding the feast.
The celebrations take place at the monastic Church of San Ruggero, located at Via Enrico Cialdini 94, in the historic center of Barletta (BT). The procession, fireworks (Litoranea di Ponente), and concert (Piazzetta Mons. Damato) involve the city center and the seafront.
Barletta is accessible by train (station on the Bologna-Lecce Adriatic line) and by car via the SS16 and the A14 motorway (Andria-Barletta or Canosa exits). The historic center is a few minutes' walk from the station.
Religious celebrations and secular events (procession, fireworks, concert) are free and open to the public.
