The feast of the ancient patron saint of Cavallino, in the heart of Salento
The Madonna del Monte Festival is the most anticipated event of the year in Cavallino, a town in the Province of Lecce just outside the Salento capital, in Puglia. For two days, during the first weekend of May, the entire community gathers around its ancient patron saint in a celebration that weaves together solemn liturgy, brass band traditions, artistic illuminations, and pyrotechnic displays. It is one of those local festivals where religious and civil dimensions merge, involving confraternities, the parish, the festival committee, and the municipality.
Devotion to the Madonna del Monte has deep roots. According to tradition, the sacred image of the Virgin and Child was discovered in the Capistri district, on the Rutta estate, when an ox scraping the ground unearthed a stone slab. A modest reed shrine was initially built on the site; in 1629, the Marquis Francesco Castromediano and his wife Bice commissioned a masonry chapel, which would become the future Sanctuary of the Mount.
The event that made the cult famous is the lightning miracle: on July 26, 1776, a lightning bolt struck the temple during mass without causing any casualties among the many faithful present. Since then, the community has venerated the Madonna del Monte as the protector and guardian of the town. Since the mid-19th century, the chapel has been associated with the municipal cemetery, becoming the cemetery chapel, where the Risorgimento patriot Sigismondo Castromediano also rests.
The heart of the festival is the descent of the statue from the chapel of the Ducal Palace, accompanied by the Hymn to Mary Most Holy of the Mount and brass band concerts, followed by the procession of the simulacrum to the mother church. On Sunday, the solemn pilgrimage to the Cappella del Monte at the cemetery takes place, featuring a Eucharistic celebration and the return to town. The liturgy is preceded by a preparatory novena.
The 2026 edition celebrates the 250th anniversary of the 1776 lightning miracle: a milestone that makes the festival even more solemn, with celebrations presided over by prominent figures of the Salento Church and symbolic moments such as the release of illuminated hot air balloons, each representing a thought and a prayer of thanksgiving. A unique opportunity to discover the devotional and popular soul of Cavallino and Salento.
The 2026 Madonna del Monte Festival in Cavallino (Lecce) is exceptional: it marks the 250th anniversary of the lightning miracle of July 26, 1776. The festival is preceded by a novena (April 23 - May 1), opened by the Archbishop Emeritus of Lecce, Michele Seccia, and culminates in the two solemn days of May 2 and 3, with celebrations presided over by the Archbishop of Lecce, Monsignor Angelo Raffaele Panzetta, and other priests of the diocese.
Alongside the liturgical dimension, the festival offers traditional civil entertainment: brass band concerts, artistic illuminations, the evocative release of illuminated hot air balloons, and a concluding fireworks display.
Cavallino is located a few kilometers from Lecce, in Salento. By car, take the SS 16 or the Lecce ring road, exiting at Cavallino. The nearest train station is in Lecce, which is connected to the town by local bus lines.
Celebrations are concentrated around Piazza Castromediano, the Ducal Palace, the mother church, and the Cappella del Monte at the municipal cemetery.
Participation in all religious and civil events is free of charge.
