Salento's devotion to the miracle-working twins, featuring illuminations, brass bands, and fireworks

In the heart of Salento, in Melendugno (province of Lecce), the devotion to the Medici Saints Cosmas and Damian lights up one of the most significant days on the local religious calendar each year on September 26th. The two twins of Eastern origin, physicians who treated the sick for free and were thus called anargyroi ("without money"), are venerated throughout Puglia as healing saints and miracle workers; the faithful entrust their health and prayers to them.
The festival takes place a few days after the feast of the main patron saint, San Niceta, and maintains the typical structure of Salento's patronal festivals, where liturgical and popular dimensions intertwine. The focal point of the day is the solemn mass celebrated in the mother church, followed by a procession with the statues of the Medici Saints that winds through the town streets, accompanied by the participation of the faithful and the entire community.
As the saints pass by, the spectacular luminarie (light displays) are switched on, transforming streets and squares into galleries of lightโan essential element of any Puglian festival. In Piazza Pertini, the grand brass band concert resonates, a staple of the best Salento touring band traditions, while on the outskirts of town, fireworks illuminate the sky during the procession.
The event is organized by the Maria Santissima Assunta Parish, the Patronal Festival Committee, and the municipal administration, in a collaborative effort involving volunteers, local merchants, and families. For Melendugno and its hamlets, from the seaside of San Foca to the inland villages, the Feast of the Medici Saints is a moment of collective identity and a chance for those who have moved away to return home.
The dates for the 2026 edition have not yet been officially announced: the liturgical feast of Saints Cosmas and Damian falls on September 26th, the day around which festivities are traditionally concentrated.
The 2026 calendar for the Feast of the Medici Saints in Melendugno has not yet been released. As per tradition, the festivities are expected to center around September 26th, the day dedicated to Saints Cosmas and Damian. For the updated program, please refer to the channels of the Maria Santissima Assunta Parish and the Patronal Festival Committee.
Melendugno is located about 20 km southeast of Lecce and is easily accessible by car from the Lecce ring road towards Maglie/Otranto and via Salento's provincial roads. The primary railway station is Lecce, which is connected to the town by local bus lines.
Religious celebrations are held in the mother church and along the streets of the town center; the brass band concert enlivens Piazza Pertini, while the fireworks are launched from Via Calimera, on the outskirts of the town.
Admission to all events is free. In late summer, Salento is still very busy: it is advisable to arrive early to find parking near the center and enjoy the lighting of the luminarie.
