The patronal feast of Salento, blending faith and tradition since 1848
The Santissimo Crocifisso Festival is the most anticipated event of the year in Arnesano, a town of just under 4,000 inhabitants in the province of Lecce, in the heart of Salento. Its origins date back to 1848, when, according to tradition, a lethal plague-like disease threatened the population: the statue of the Crucifix was carried in procession through the town streets, and the subsequent recoveries were attributed to a miracle. Since then, every year on the first Sunday of July, the Arnesano community renews that vow of gratitude with a festival that blends religious devotion and popular joy.
The most intense and characteristic moment is the Descent of the Cross. On the eve of the festival, at the end of the solemn Eucharistic celebration, the simulacrum of Jesus Crucified is removed from its niche on the altar and accompanied by the singing of the hymn to Jesus Crucified, before being carried in procession among the faithful. It is a deeply felt ritual, which the locals affectionately call the "te lu Signore" festival, marking the start of the celebrations. The festival concludes, a few days later, with the solemn Ascent of the Cross, when the statue returns to its place on the altar.
Alongside the religious program, secular festivities enliven the historic center and Piazza Palazzo Marchesale. The town lights up with traditional luminarie (light displays), while the program includes a concert by the "Cittร di Lecce" Brass Band, musical entertainment, and a highly anticipated fireworks display that lights up the sky at midnight. There is no shortage of street vendors and stands offering typical Salento products, from pastries to local gastronomic specialties.
Located just a few kilometers from Lecce, Arnesano preserves a fine historic center featuring the Mother Church dedicated to Maria Santissima Assunta, with its Lecce stone altars and Salento Baroque style, and the 17th-century Palazzo Marchesale. The festival is the ideal opportunity to discover the town and savor Salento cuisine, including pittole, fava beans and chicory, lampascioni, and the many delights of the Puglia peasant tradition.
The 2026 Santissimo Crocifisso Festival in Arnesano is held from July 5th to 12th. The preparatory novena precedes the festival, with celebrations culminating on the eve of July 5th: at 8:30 PM the Holy Rosary, at 9:00 PM the prayer of the Five Wounds and the solemn Eucharistic concelebration, at the end of which the traditional Descent of the Cross from the altar takes place, accompanied by the singing of the hymn to Jesus Crucified.
From July 6th, secular festivities begin in Piazza Palazzo Marchesale, with a concert by the "Cittร di Lecce" Brass Band, entertainment shows, and the midnight fireworks display. The octave of the cross is celebrated on July 8th and 12th. The historic center fills with illuminations and stalls featuring typical Salento products.
Arnesano is located about 8 km west of Lecce, in Salento. By car, it can be reached from the Lecce ring road, taking the exit towards Arnesano/Monteroni. The nearest train station is Lecce, served by Trenitalia trains, from where you can continue by bus or taxi. The reference airport is Brindisi-Salento, about 45 km away.
Access to the festivities in the square and the streets of the center is free. Religious celebrations take place in the Mother Church. For the detailed program, it is recommended to consult the channels of the Arnesano Patronal Festival Committee and the Municipality of Arnesano.
