The grand patronal feast of the Salento capital, honoring Saints Oronzo, Giusto, and Fortunato
The Sant'Oronzo Festival is the most iconic celebration in Lecce, the capital of Salento and its namesake province in Apulia. It is held every year in late August to honor the city's three patron saints: Oronzo, Giusto, and Fortunato. The heart of the festivities is the scenic Piazza Sant'Oronzo, dominated by the Roman column topped with the statue of the saint, the city's first bishop and protector.
Sant'Oronzo has been venerated in Lecce since ancient times; according to tradition, he was the city's first bishop and suffered martyrdom in the 1st century. Devotion grew immensely in the 17th century when the saint was invoked as a protector against the plague that spared Lecce. Since then, the festival has become the city's premier summer event. Spiritual preparation begins with the undena, the eleven days of prayer preceding August 24th, while the most solemn moment remains the procession of the statues of the three saints through the streets of the historic center.
Alongside religious rites, the festival is an extraordinary civic and popular event. For several days, Lecce transforms:
The Sant'Oronzo Festival is a free event open to all, drawing thousands of visitors, tourists, and Salento natives returning home for the occasion. It is the perfect time to discover Lecce's Baroque architecture, Salento cuisine, and the hospitality of a city that truly shines during these days.
The 2026 Sant'Oronzo Festival brings the historic center of Lecce to life from August 23rd to 27th, following the program approved by the City Council. Religious rites honoring the patron saints Oronzo, Giusto, and Fortunato are accompanied by a rich civic calendar that fills Piazza Sant'Oronzo and the streets of the Baroque center.
Among the most anticipated moments are the solemn procession of the statues of the three saints on August 24th, brass band concerts, popular vernacular theater at the Teatini, and the major event on August 26th featuring the Sound Oronzo project dedicated to young talents and the concert by Paolo Belli & Big Band. The festival concludes with a fireworks display and the famous artistic Salento illuminations.
Throughout the festival: artistic illuminations, a fair with handicraft stalls and local products, and a funfair near the stadium.
Lecce train station is about a 10-15 minute walk from Piazza Sant'Oronzo. By car, the city is accessible via the Brindisi-Lecce expressway; during the festival, the historic center is closed to traffic.
We recommend the parking areas at Foro Boario, Via Adua/Via del Mare, Piazzale Carmelo Bene, and Settelacquare (with shuttle service to the center).
Admission is free for all events. We recommend arriving well in advance, especially on the evening of August 24th for the procession and August 26th for the concerts in the square.
