The patronal feast of Monteroni di Lecce, in the heart of Salento

In the heart of Salento, just a few kilometers from Lecce, the municipality of Monteroni di Lecce (Province of Lecce, Puglia) dedicates its most important feast every year to Saint Anthony of Padua, the city's main patron saint. It is an event that combines deep religious devotion with popular joy, transforming the town's streets and squares for a few days into one large festive space lit by traditional Salento illuminations.
Although the liturgical feast of Saint Anthony is set for June 13th, the civil celebration in Monteroni is traditionally held on the first Sunday of August. This shift stems from a uniquely Salento reason: to allow Monteroni emigrants, who return to their hometown for summer holidays, to participate in the festivities in honor of their Saint. Thus, in August, the community reunites, and the feast becomes a moment of gathering and collective identity.
The spiritual heart of the feast is the Tredicina, the thirteen-day cycle of preparation preceding the solemnity: daily masses, catechesis, and moments of prayer before the statue of the Saint take place in the Mother Church. The highlight is the solemn Eucharistic concelebration, often presided over by high-ranking prelates, followed by the procession of the statue of Saint Anthony through the town streets, accompanied by brass bands and the participation of the entire community.
Alongside the religious functions, a rich civil program is developed, organized by the Patronal Feast Committee in collaboration with the municipal administration. Classic events include:
The Feast of Saint Anthony of Padua is much more than a religious anniversary: it is the moment when Monteroni di Lecce reveals its soul, amidst faith, music, illuminations, and flavors. For visitors, it is the perfect opportunity to experience the authenticity of a Salento patronal feast, where the sacred and the popular have coexisted for centuries.
The 2026 edition of the Feast of Saint Anthony of Padua in Monteroni di Lecce has not yet been officially announced. According to custom, the festivities will be held around the first Sunday of August, preceded by the Tredicina preparation in the Mother Church.
The complete civil and religious program — including the procession, brass band concerts, the Porchetta Festival, and major evening concerts in Piazza Falconieri — will be published by the Patronal Feast Committee in the weeks leading up to the event. Check back on this page for updates.
The festivities are concentrated in the center of Monteroni di Lecce (73047), between the Mother Church and Piazza Falconieri, which hosts the evening concerts and main outdoor celebrations.
