The patronal feast of Melendugno honoring the knight from the East

The San Niceta Patronal Feast is the most cherished event in the calendar of Melendugno, a town in the Province of Lecce overlooking the Adriatic coast of Salento. Melendugno is the only town in Italy to have San Niceta the Goth as its patron saint, a knight and martyr who lived in the 4th century: his name derives from the Greek Nike, meaning "victory," and for centuries he has been invoked as a protector against calamities.
Devotion is rooted in the Middle Ages, when the Abbey of San Niceta was built at the town's gates in the 12th century, linked to the Greek Byzantine rite of which Salento preserves deep traces. The bond between the community and its Saint strengthened after the 1743 earthquake: the town remained unscathed and attributed its salvation to the intercession of Niceta, definitively consecrating his cult.
The festivities center around the canonical dates of September 15 and 16 and usually extend over the entire preceding weekend, creating a program that weaves together religious rites and street festivals. The spiritual heart is the Holy Mass in the Byzantine rite celebrated at the Abbey and the solemn procession that winds through the historic center: during the pageant, the mayor symbolically hands the city keys to the Saint, a gesture that encapsulates the civic and religious identity of Melendugno.
Alongside the devotional dimension, the town lights up with artistic illuminations and hosts brass band concerts by renowned Apulian ensembles, comedy shows, children's entertainment, and musical evenings. A must-see is the publication of Il Melendugnese, a historic local satirical newspaper that has reached over sixty editions.
The festival concludes with traditional fireworks, preceded at dawn by a more intimate Mass at the Abbey and the release of hot air balloons, one of the most poetic and anticipated moments for the community. For those visiting Salento in September, San Niceta is the ideal opportunity to discover an authentic hinterland, far from the beach tourism of Torre dell'Orso and San Foca but just a few kilometers from the sea.
The 2026 edition of the San Niceta Patronal Feast in Melendugno is expected, as every year, for mid-September, around the canonical dates of the 15th and 16th of the month. At the moment, the Patronal Feast Committee has not yet released the official calendar or the detailed program.
Based on established tradition, the festivities should feature the Holy Mass in the Byzantine rite at the Abbey of San Niceta, the solemn procession through the streets of the historic center with the presentation of the city keys to the Saint, concerts by Apulian bands, artistic illuminations, and the traditional concluding fireworks. This page will be updated with dates and the program as soon as they are announced.
Melendugno can be reached by car from Lecce in about 25 minutes by taking the SP1 towards the coast. The nearest train station is Lecce, a terminus served by Trenitalia, from which you can continue by bus or taxi. The reference airport is Salento Airport in Brindisi, about an hour's drive away.
Events take place in the historic center and main squares: it is advisable to park in areas outside the town and continue on foot, especially on the evenings of the procession and fireworks. The Abbey of San Niceta is located outside the town in the open countryside: check the celebration times at the parish. September in Salento is mild and ideal for combining the festival with a day at the beach in Torre dell'Orso, San Foca, or Roca Vecchia.
All religious and civic events are free and open to everyone.
