About Luci d'Artista

Every winter, Salerno transforms into an open-air museum of light: Luci d'Artista illuminates the squares, streets, and monuments of the Campanian capital with light installations, luminous sculptures, and themed trails winding through the historic center, the Villa Comunale, and the Lungomare Trieste. Established in 2006, the event has accompanied Salerno's Christmas season from mid-November to early February, becoming one of the most visited holiday attractions in Southern Italy. Access to the installations is always free.

An open-air museum of light

Luci d'Artista is the grand artistic lighting event that transforms Salerno, the capital of its namesake province in Campania, into an urban exhibition space every winter. These are not merely Christmas decorations: the installations are genuine light artworks designed by artists and set designers, mounted on facades, trees, squares, and cliffs, meant to be explored on foot along a continuous route that stretches from the historic center to the sea. The Municipality of Salerno organizes the event with the support of the Campania Region, which has funded the festival in recent years as part of the Cohesion Agreement.

The route: historic center, Villa Comunale, and the waterfront

The heart of the exhibition is the Villa Comunale, which hosts the most ambitious scenographic display each year, with gardens and pathways completely draped in light. From there, the route winds through the streets and squares of the center: Via dei Mercanti, the pedestrian artery of the old town, Piazza Portanova, Piazza Flavio Gioia (the famous Rotonda), Piazza Sant'Agostino, and Piazza della Libertร , all the way to the Lungomare Trieste, where palm trees and rocks become supports for micro-light installations. Recent editions have also featured video mapping projected onto the city's historic buildings and theaters.

Twenty years of history

The first edition dates back to 2006: since then, Luci d'Artista has grown to become the primary tourist driver of the Salerno winter, attracting visitors from across Campania, the rest of Italy, and abroad. The 2025/2026 edition marked the milestone of the twentieth edition, while the next one, the 21st, has already been funded and scheduled. Over the years, the event has adopted a different theme for each season, alternating between imagery related to nature, fairy tales, space, myth, and Christmas tradition.

More than just lights

A rich Christmas program revolves around the installations, which may include each year:

  • Christmas markets and craft stalls in the city squares;
  • concerts of classical, gospel, and jazz music in churches, theaters, and on the streets;
  • shows for children, animated readings, and creative workshops;
  • street food events and tastings of typical Salerno products;
  • the grand New Year's Eve concert in the square, featuring national guests.

When to go

The lights are switched on every evening during the period, usually starting in the late afternoon. The weekends in December are by far the most crowded: those who prefer a more relaxed visit can choose weekdays or the weeks in November and January, when the route is fully set up but the city is much quieter. The itinerary is entirely pedestrian and suitable for families with children and strollers.

Why it became a phenomenon

Luci d'Artista has changed the tourist perception of Salerno: a city historically considered a stopover on the way to the Amalfi Coast and Paestum has become a winter destination in its own right, with significant benefits for hotels, restaurants, and local businesses. The Salerno model has since been imitated by numerous other Italian cities, but the Campanian edition remains one of the most impressive in the country for its scale and continuity.

Luci d'Artista โ€” edition 2026

The 21st edition of Luci d'Artista has already been funded and planned: the Campania Region has allocated 2,750,000 euros from the 2021-2027 FSC resources, plus 150,000 euros provided by the Salerno Chamber of Commerce to extend the installations to neighborhoods excluded from the regional funding. The Municipality of Salerno has announced that the exact opening and closing dates will be released between September and October 2026.

The 21st edition of Luci d'Artista

Following the milestone of the twentieth edition, the Municipality of Salerno has started the organizational machinery for the 21st edition of Luci d'Artista in good time, scheduled between autumn 2026 and the first months of 2027. Funding was provided by a decree from the Campania Region: 2,750,000 euros fully covered by the 2021-2027 FSC resources as part of the Cohesion Agreement, to which are added 150,000 euros allocated in agreement with the Salerno Chamber of Commerce to expand the light route to areas of the city left out of the main project.

Project guidelines

The approved project includes a substantial renewal of the displays, with the relocation of some historic installations to neighborhoods and peripheral areas and the creation of new scenographies. The artistic direction is entrusted to Daniela Capasso. Announced elements include a large display dedicated to fairy tales at the Villa Comunale, the return of the Solar System in Piazza Flavio Gioia after fourteen years, new video mapping on buildings and theaters in the center, and lighting interventions along the Lungomare Trieste.

What we know about the dates

As of today, the official calendar has not yet been published. The call for safety and security services, published in the summer of 2026, places the event between autumn 2026 and the first months of 2027, in line with the tradition that sees the lights turned on in mid-November and closed between late January and early February. The final dates will be communicated by the municipal administration in the autumn.
