The patron saint of Maiori: processions, the 'Madonna's Run', and fireworks over the sea
In Maiori, on the Amalfi Coast in the province of Salerno, the most heartfelt festival of the year is celebrated not just in the square, but between the sea and the staircase of the Collegiate Church. According to tradition, in the 13th century, the effigy of Santa Maria a Mare was found drifting off the beach, and since then, the Virgin has been the town's patron saint. Her festival, set on the Solemnity of the Assumption, marks the Ferragosto holiday for the entire Reginna valley, blending deep faith with an ancient maritime identity—still visible today in the gestures of the pallbearers and the emotion of the crowds lining the promenade.
The festivities extend well beyond Ferragosto. The calendar kicks off on August 5th with the traditional Alzata del Quadro (Raising of the Portrait) on Corso Reginna: the image of the patron saint is hoisted above the main street, signaling that the festival has truly begun. This is followed by a floral tribute from the Fire Brigade at the monument dedicated to Santa Maria a Mare. In the following days, the Collegiate Church hosts a solemn novena, with morning mass, the rosary, and evening celebrations, while the town center fills with lights, market stalls, and visitors from across the coast.
The day of the Assumption begins early with a series of masses in the Collegiate Church, followed by a musical tour of the town by the local band. In the late afternoon, a solemn pontifical mass gathers the entire community in the church; in the evening, the statue is carried in a procession through the streets of Maiori, accompanied by confraternities and the brass band.
The moment everyone waits for, however, comes at the return: the pallbearers charge up the long staircase leading to the Collegiate Church, carrying the Madonna at a run amidst the applause and cheers of the crowd. This is the famous Madonna's Run, a popular ritual passed down through generations that captures the entire spirit of the festival in a few seconds. Those who have never seen it are often surprised by the intensity: this is no tourist performance, but a town recognizing itself in its patron saint.
To close the day, around 11:00 PM, a fireworks display is launched from a barge moored in the bay, right in front of the Maiori promenade. The fireworks reflect on the water and are visible from the entire beach, the terraces along the main street, and even from neighboring Amalfi Coast towns: it is one of the most iconic images of Ferragosto in Campania and the community's true farewell to its Madonna.
Music is an integral part of the tradition. For the 2026 edition, the lyrical-symphonic programs of the 'Città di Noicattaro' Band on the eve of the festival and the 'Città di Minori' Band on August 15th in Corso Reginna are highly anticipated, just before the fireworks. During the same period, the municipality also hosts gastronomic events, including the Melanzana alla Cioccolata De.Co. Festival, celebrating Maiori's signature dessert, which holds the municipal designation of origin.
The patronal festival is part of a vast summer program—over sixty events between June and August, mostly free—which includes the Maiori Jazz and Maiori Danza festivals, theatrical performances in the gardens of Palazzo Mezzacapo, and concerts at the Tourist Port. Visitors arriving for Santa Maria a Mare will find a city vibrant from morning to night, with the longest beach on the Amalfi Coast just steps from the center.
Compared to other more tourist-oriented summer festivals, the one in Maiori remains a true village feast in the best sense of the word: families return from abroad for the occasion, children follow the band, and the elderly comment on the run up the stairs. For those visiting Campania in mid-August, it is a chance to see the Amalfi Coast from the inside, rather than just from the ferry pier.
The summer program presented by the Municipality of Maiori confirms the entire traditional sequence of the patronal festival for 2026, spread over eleven days. The opening is marked by the Raising of the Portrait on August 5th on Corso Reginna at 6:00 PM, with a floral tribute from the Fire Brigade at the monument dedicated to the patron saint; this is followed by the days of the novena in the Collegiate Church.
August 15th, the Solemnity of the Assumption, is the main day: masses from dawn, a musical tour by the band, pontifical mass, evening procession, and the Madonna's Run up the staircase. At 10:00 PM, on Corso Reginna, the 'Città di Minori' Band will perform a lyrical-symphonic program; at 11:00 PM, the barge moored in the bay will launch the fireworks over the sea. On the eve, August 14th, the lyrical-symphonic program of the 'Città di Noicattaro' Band is scheduled.
During the same days, Maiori also hosts the Melanzana alla Cioccolata De.Co. Festival (August 7th and 8th) and, later in the month, paid concerts at the Tourist Port, which remain separate from the patronal festival.
Celebrations take place in the center of Maiori (SA), between the Collegiate Church of Santa Maria a Mare, its monumental staircase, and Corso Reginna. The fireworks are best viewed from the promenade and the beach.
By car along the SS163 Amalfitana road, from Salerno or Amalfi: traffic and parking are difficult on Ferragosto, so arrive well in advance. By bus using SITA Sud lines from Salerno, Amalfi, and Sorrento. By ferry from the ports of Salerno and Amalfi during the summer season. Nearest train station: Salerno.
All patronal festival events are free and take place outdoors or in the church; no tickets or reservations are required.
Book your accommodation several months in advance, as the coast is fully booked during Ferragosto. To watch the Madonna's Run, it is best to position yourself along the sides of the Collegiate staircase at least half an hour before the procession returns. Please remember this is a religious rite: dress modestly in church and show respect during celebrations.
