The itinerant sacred representation of the Passion of Christ through the streets of Petrosino
In the heart of Holy Week, the town of Petrosino, in the province of Trapani, revives one of the most deeply felt traditions of Western Sicily: the Living Passion, an itinerant sacred performance that brings the final days of Jesus Christ to life along the town's streets. The event, organized by the Petrus Sinus Cultural Association with the patronage of the Municipality of Petrosino, involves hundreds of volunteers—including actors, costume designers, and technicians—every year, turning the town into an open-air theater.
The performance begins at the Maria SS. delle Grazie Church and winds through the main town arteries, with performers bringing the most poignant episodes of the Passion to life: from the entry into the city to the trial, the Via Crucis, and the deposition. The audience follows the procession along the streets, accompanying the actors on a journey that combines spiritual and theatrical dimensions.
The highlight of the day is the Crucifixion, staged in the evening, followed by the Resurrection. The sets, lighting, and performances portray "passion, pain, and sacrifice, but also hope," as the organizers like to emphasize. The performance concludes with a message of rebirth that fits perfectly with the Easter liturgy.
The Living Passion is not just a show: it is a great moment of unity for Petrosino. Each edition has seen growing participation from citizens of all ages, in a collective effort that weaves religious sentiment with local identity. For Sicily, a land rich in Holy Week rituals, the Petrosino performance represents a precious piece of the popular heritage.
The event is held during Holy Week, generally on Palm Sunday or in the days leading up to Easter. Admission is free, and the event is designed to welcome both residents and visitors who wish to discover one of the most authentic expressions of Sicilian popular religiosity.

The culminating moment, the Crucifixion, was staged at 9:30 PM in Piazza della Repubblica. The artistic direction was entrusted to Santo D'Aguanno and Emanuele Lo Cascio, with Alberto Perrone directing the Crucifixion and Giuseppe Saladino as technical director, under the patronage of the Municipality of Petrosino.
