The Nativity comes to life among traditional farmhouses, ancient crafts, and pettole in the heart of Salento
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
The Galatone Living Nativity is one of the most beloved Christmas events in Salento and the municipality of Galatone, in the province of Lecce. Established in the early 2000s and curated by the parish groups of the SS. Cosma e Damiano Martiri Church, the event has spanned over twenty editions, becoming a deeply rooted tradition animated by parishioners of all ages who take on the roles of shepherds, artisans, and Nativity characters.
The most recent setup is titled "Along the Shepherds' Way – The Holy Night of Galatone" and transforms the nativity scene through true "visual emotions." Visitors become time travelers, protagonists of an immersive experience set in a new Bethlehem, where the representation of the birth of Jesus is framed by the crafts and arts of yesteryear.
The performance takes place in the characteristic Masseria "ti li Tre Petre", along the provincial road connecting Galatone to Santa Maria al Bagno. Around the carriage entrance and the peasant dwellings, long-lost Salento crafts come to life: the blacksmith, the carpenter, the spinner, the baker. It is a journey into the rural memory of Salento, where every workshop tells a fragment of life from the past.
The gastronomic dimension is not forgotten: along the path, visitors can taste warm, golden pettole (fried dough balls) and bread baked in the farmhouse's characteristic wood-fired oven—flavors that have always accompanied Christmas in Salento.
The Galatone Living Nativity is held under the patronage of the Puglia Region, the Province of Lecce, and the Municipality of Galatone. More than just a show, it is a choral moment where the entire community gathers around the values of tradition, faith, and hospitality, offering citizens and visitors an authentic experience of Christmas in Salento.
The Galatone Living Nativity will likely return for the 2026 Christmas season, curated by the parish groups of the SS. Cosma e Damiano Martiri Church in the municipality of Galatone (Province of Lecce, Puglia).
At the moment, the dates and program for the 2026 edition have not yet been made public. The reenactment of the Nativity, featuring ancient Salento crafts, community performers, and traditional flavors like pettole, is expected to maintain the immersive format of previous editions. The final calendar will be communicated by the organizers in the weeks leading up to Christmas.
The event is held at the Masseria "ti li Tre Petre," along the SP Galatone–Santa Maria al Bagno road, in the municipality of Galatone (LE), Puglia.
By car: Galatone can be reached via the SS 101 Lecce–Gallipoli road; from the town center, continue on the provincial road towards Santa Maria al Bagno. By train: Galatone station on the Ferrovie del Sud Est line. By plane: Brindisi-Casale airport is about an hour away.
The performances take place during the Christmas season, generally in the evening (from approximately 5:30 PM to 8:30 PM). Admission is free. Warm clothing is recommended as the path is outdoors.
Updates on dates and the program can be found on the Facebook page of the SS. Cosma e Damiano Martiri Church in Galatone.
