The widespread book festival in the heart of the Gargano
The Literature and Territory – Street Book Festival is the event that, for three days, transforms the historic center of San Giovanni Rotondo (Province of Foggia, Puglia) into a true open-air library. Born as the natural evolution of the Literature and Territory cultural series, active in the Gargano since 2024 with various meetings and events, the festival took on the form of an urban street book festival in 2026: the town's squares, courtyards, and streets become the stage for a great collective dialogue about books, reading, and contemporary culture.
The underlying idea is simple and powerful: to bring literature out of the halls and among the people, amidst the white stones of the Gargano village, to make the city a place of meeting, discussion, and sharing. The result is a widespread cultural path that unites big names in national fiction, emerging voices, illustrators, and performers.
Each edition brings over thirty authors and illustrators from all over Italy to San Giovanni Rotondo. Alongside nationally prominent figures, there is space for established writers, young talents in fiction and non-fiction, designers, and cultural operators. Presentations alternate with public dialogues, readings, moments dedicated to memory, and meetings designed to bring even the youngest closer to the pleasure of reading.
The calendar is built to involve every type of audience: book presentations, dialogues with authors, creative workshops, theatrical performances, live music, and activities dedicated to children and families. The playful and educational dimension is particularly well-curated, with appointments that turn reading into an experience to be lived and shared outdoors.
The beating heart of the event is Piazza dei Martiri, home to the opening ceremony and the main stage, but the festival extends along Corso Umberto I and into symbolic city spaces such as the Municipal Cloister and the Civic Museum, which open up for three days to host presentations, workshops, and shows.
The festival is promoted and organized by Gargano Vita and the Banca di Credito Cooperativo of San Giovanni Rotondo, in collaboration with the LibreriBrà bookstores of San Giovanni Rotondo and Ubik of Foggia, with the involvement of the Pro Loco, the Presidi del Libro, and numerous local associations. The event is sponsored by the Puglia Region, the Province of Foggia, the Municipality of San Giovanni Rotondo, and the University of Foggia. Admission to all events is free.
The 2026 edition of Literature and Territory – Street Book Festival took place from May 29 to 31, 2026, marking the debut of the event in its new guise as a widespread urban festival. For three days, San Giovanni Rotondo transformed, according to local reports, into "a large open-air literary saloon," with over thirty national guests including writers and illustrators.
The opening ceremony was held on Friday, May 29 at 10:00 AM in Piazza dei Martiri, followed by three days of presentations, dialogues, workshops, and shows distributed between the square, the Municipal Cloister, and the Civic Museum. The event recorded a significant public turnout, confirming the growing interest in an event that combines culture and territory.
