Summer evenings filled with lanterns, live music, and South Tyrolean flavors in the historic center of Vipiteno
The Laternenparty, or Lantern Festival, is one of the most beloved summer events in Vipiteno/Sterzing, a town in the province of Bolzano in the Trentino-Alto Adige region. Over several consecutive evenings, the historic center transforms into an open-air stage, illuminated by the warm glow of the lanterns that give the event its name.
The heart of the festival is the pedestrian zone of the historic center of Vipiteno, featuring its famous arcaded street, the Twelve Tower, and the colorful facades of the medieval houses. The evenings take place every Wednesday between July and August, starting at 7:00 PM and continuing until 11:00 PM, regardless of weather conditions. Admission is free and open to all.
Live bands and local musical groups alternate along the alleys, while folk groups in traditional costumes perform ancient Tyrolean dances. The atmosphere is typical of South Tyrolean village festivals: convivial, relaxed, and suitable for all ages, with a rhythm that accompanies your evening stroll from one stall to the next.
One of the highlights of the Laternenparty is its culinary soul. The street food kitchens set up in the alleys offer Italian and South Tyrolean specialties, ranging from traditional peasant dishes to simple bites to enjoy on the go, accompanied by local wines and beers. Alongside the gourmet stands, local artisans exhibit and sell their handmade products, helping to promote the trades and traditions of the municipality of Vipiteno and the Isarco Valley.
The Laternenparty captures the essence of a South Tyrolean summer: the bond with popular traditions, the focus on good food, and the hospitality of a border community where Italian and German cultures coexist. It is the perfect opportunity to discover Vipiteno by night, immersed in an intimate and genuine atmosphere that has made this festival a summer classic in the Isarco Valley.
The 2026 Laternenparty in Vipiteno/Sterzing returns with six summer evenings in the historic center. The confirmed dates are the Wednesdays July 8, 15, 22, 29 and August 5, 19, 2026 (the evening of August 12 will not take place). Each event starts at 7:00 PM and continues until 11:00 PM, regardless of weather conditions.
Once again this year, the pedestrian zone will glow with lanterns and host live bands, folk dance groups, street food stalls with South Tyrolean and Italian specialties, and artisan booths. Admission is free.
Every evening: live music in the alleys, folk dances, street food, and an artisan market. The evening of August 12 is excluded from the 2026 calendar.
Vipiteno/Sterzing is located along the Brenner axis and is easily accessible by car via the A22 motorway (Vipiteno exit) and by train via the Vipiteno-Val Giovo station on the Brenner line. The historic center is pedestrianized: we recommend parking in the town car parks and continuing on foot.
The evenings start at 7:00 PM and continue until approximately 11:00 PM. Admission is free. The event takes place in all weather conditions.
