Kaltern in Red, the festival of South Tyrolean red wines

Kaltern in Red (in German Kaltern ganz in Rot) is the spring event that transforms the Main Square (Marktplatz) of Caldaro sulla strada del vino, in the province of Bolzano, into an open-air lounge dedicated to red wine. As evening falls, the square glows in red, many participants dress in theme, and the entire village is enveloped in a warm, convivial atmosphere in the heart of the South Tyrolean Wine Road (Trentino-Alto Adige).

The wines starring in the evening

The event is organized by the wein.kaltern cooperative winery and showcases the region's great reds: front and center is the Lago di Caldaro (Kalterersee), the town's signature wine, alongside rarities and reserves from local producers. The absolute star is the 'Charta of Lago di Caldaro' quality seal, an award granted only to red wines that pass a rigorous annual blind tasting: a guarantee of excellence that makes every sip a discovery.

Tasting, cuisine, and music

The tasting is offered at a fixed price, with a deposit for the glass that is refunded upon return. Participants can wander between winery stands, sampling different labels accompanied by traditional South Tyrolean gourmet specialties prepared for the occasion. The event is framed by live music, which enlivens the square until late in the evening. Admission to the event is free; you only pay for the tasting package if you wish to sample the wines.

An event in the Caldaro calendar

Kaltern in Red is part of the rich oenological calendar of the Municipality of Caldaro sulla strada del vino, one of the most wine-oriented villages in all of South Tyrol. The event has a summer counterpart, Kaltern in White (Kaltern ganz in Weiß), dedicated to white wines. Together, they tell the story of the winemaking soul of a village overlooking the famous Lake Caldaro, amidst vineyards, sunshine, and South Tyrolean tradition.
