About Kaiserschmarrenfest

The Kaiserschmarrenfest is a festival dedicated to the Kaiserschmarren, the iconic dessert of South Tyrolean tradition, held every summer at the Madritschhütte (Madritsch refuge) at an altitude of 2,820 meters above Sulden, in the municipality of Stelvio. Accessible via the Seilbahnen Sulden cable car and chairlift, the day combines free tastings of freshly prepared Kaiserschmarren, live music, and breathtaking views of the Ortler group.

Kaiserschmarren celebrations at the foot of the Ortler

The Kaiserschmarrenfest is the summer event that celebrates the most delicious dish of South Tyrolean cuisine at the Madritschhütte: the Kaiserschmarren, a fluffy, golden, shredded sweet pancake, dusted with powdered sugar and traditionally served with cranberry or apple compote. The festival takes place at an altitude of 2,820 meters, on one of the most spectacular panoramic terraces in South Tyrol, above the village of Sulden, part of the municipality of Stelvio, in the province of Bolzano, in the heart of the Stelvio National Park.

A day at high altitude

The Madritschhütte is easily reached via the Seilbahnen Sulden lifts: the cable car (sections I and II) and the Madritsch chairlift bring hikers right to the refuge, which was rebuilt and modernized in 2017 while retaining its traditional wooden character. From its spacious sun terrace, the view embraces the majestic Ortler group, the "King" of the South Tyrolean mountains, and its surrounding glaciers.

Free tasting and live music

The heart of the festival is the free tasting of freshly made Kaiserschmarren, accompanied by live music at high altitude and other local specialties. It is an informal and convivial event, designed for those who love to combine mountain hiking with the pleasure of good Tyrolean food, in an alpine festival atmosphere among the peaks of the Stelvio National Park.

A symbol of South Tyrolean tradition

The Kaiserschmarren is one of the most beloved desserts in the Alps: the name, which literally means "Emperor's mess," refers to the Habsburg tradition. Enjoying it freshly made at over 2,800 meters, with the snows of the Ortler as a backdrop, is an experience that captures the gastronomic and alpine soul of South Tyrol. The event is organized by Seilbahnen Sulden, the operators of the Sulden ski lifts.
