The Christmas Eve bonfire in Piazza Mazzini, one of the oldest fire traditions in the Madonie mountains

In Isnello, a small village in the Province of Palermo nestled within the Madonie Regional Natural Park, Christmas is heralded by the glow of a great bonfire. The Christmas Luminaria is one of the oldest and most evocative fire traditions in Sicily: on the afternoon of Christmas Eve, a mountain of wood, stacked over the preceding weeks, is set alight in Piazza Mazzini, which fills with residents and visitors alike.
The element that makes the Isnello Luminaria unique is the so-called ntinna: a panettone is placed at the very top of the woodpile, serving as a symbol of good fortune for the coming year. The ritual is rooted in an ancient custom, passed down through generations to renew the sense of community and celebrate the birth of the Christ Child around the fire in the heart of winter.
As the bonfire burns, the square transforms into a gathering place. People share local delicacies, such as the Le Corna biscuits, and drink vino cotto (mulled wine) in a festive atmosphere that surrounds the Midnight Mass. Christmas greetings are exchanged before the fire, in a simple yet powerful gesture that echoes the local sentiment: "we are here, together, in the heart of winter."
The Luminaria is part of a rich calendar of Isnello Christmas rituals. During the holidays, the Frottole take place—processions featuring banners and hymns accompanied by the historic "Francesco Bajardi" Municipal Band—while on December 31st, children carry 'A Nunna Vecchia, knocking on doors with bells to receive sweets and well-wishes. With its medieval urban layout, artistic churches, and the nearby GAL Hassin Astronomical Park, Isnello offers an authentic Christmas experience suspended between faith, folklore, and nature.
The Isnello Christmas Luminaria is a centuries-old tradition that repeats every year on the evening of December 24th in Piazza Mazzini. As of the writing of this page, organizers have not yet released official confirmation or details for the 2026 edition. Based on custom, the event is expected to take place on Christmas Eve, featuring the bonfire, the exchange of greetings, 'Le Corna' biscuits, and mulled wine. Information will be updated as soon as it is published by the Pro Loco of Isnello.
The Luminaria takes place on December 24th, in the late afternoon, in Piazza Mazzini in the historic center of Isnello (PA).
Isnello can be reached by car from the A19 Palermo-Catania motorway (take the Buonfornello/Cefalù exit) and then following the SP54 towards the Madonie; it is about a 25-minute drive from Cefalù. The nearest train station is in Cefalù, on the Palermo-Messina line.
The event is held outdoors at a high altitude, so warm clothing is recommended. Participation in the bonfire and the sharing of sweets and wine is free and open to everyone.
