About Living Nativity of Pollina

Every December, the historic center of Pollina, a small village in the Madonie mountains near Palermo, turns into an ancient Bethlehem thanks to the Community Living Nativity. Along the alleys, churches, and small squares of the town, a route featuring over forty scenes brings to life the crafts, faces, and traditions of the past, entirely animated by local volunteers. The guided tour lasts about two hours and includes tastings of local products, such as the famous manna beer, and moving performances.

An entire village becoming Bethlehem

The Living Nativity of the Pollina Community is one of the most evocative Christmas events in the Madonie mountains, in the heart of the Palermo province, Sicily. Every year during the holidays, the historic center of Pollina — a hilltop village overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea — dresses up for the occasion and transforms into an ancient Bethlehem, where visitors can take an authentic step back in time.

A journey of art, history, and culture

The nativity scene is not just a static display: it is a true journey through the streets, alleys, churches, and buildings of the ancient village. In recent editions, the route has reached 42 scenic scenes, each dedicated to a trade or a moment of daily life from the past. Visitors encounter ancient artisans, animals, sounds, scents, and gestures that tell the story and identity of this Madonie land.

The community as the protagonist

What makes the Living Nativity of Pollina special is the involvement of the entire community: men, women, and children who work together as volunteers to bring the story to life. The project also involves local schools, with the collaboration of the "Jacopo del Duca – Diego Bianca Amato" Institute of Cefalù and the Pollina – San Mauro Castelverde Comprehensive Institute, in a precious exchange of knowledge between generations.

Tastings and manna

The entrance ticket includes a culinary journey with seven tastings of typical local products: pane cunzato (seasoned bread), fried bread, fresh tuma cheese, warm ricotta, mulled wine, wine biscuits, and the renowned manna beer. Pollina is known as the "Land of Manna," the sweet sap extracted from ash trees that has characterized the economy and culture of these Madonie towns for centuries.

How the visit works

Access to the nativity scene is via a guided tour lasting about two hours, during which you walk through all the scenes of the village accompanied by a guide. There are also two moving performances along the way. To facilitate access to the historic center, a shuttle service is active to and from the parking lot at the entrance of the route. An experience designed for families, tradition enthusiasts, and visitors who wish to discover the most authentic side of Sicily during the Christmas period.
