A concert of folk and mountain songs at the foot of Castel Stenico
In canto al castello is the annual summer event where the Coro Castelcampo brings the tradition of folk and mountain singing to the stunning backdrop of Castel Stenico, in the municipality of Stenico, Province of Trento (Trentino-Alto Adige). The free-admission evening takes place outdoors at the foot of the fortress, creating an atmospheric setting that blends the choir's voices with the ancient castle walls, nestled in the greenery of the Giudicarie valleys.
The Coro Castelcampo is a male-voice choir founded in 1963 under the guidance of Father Mario Levri, a Franciscan friar and esteemed choral music composer. Over the years, various conductors have led the group, with the current director being Daniele Giongo. The choir, which brings together singers from the Bleggio, Lomaso, and Stenico areas, consists of about thirty members divided into tenor, baritone, and bass sections. They passionately cultivate the repertoire of folk and mountain songs from Trentino and the wider Alpine region.
Castel Stenico is one of the oldest and best-preserved castles in Trentino. Its origins date back to the 12th century, and for centuries it served as the residence for the captains who administered the territory on behalf of the Prince-Bishops of Trento. Today, the complex—managed by the Castello del Buonconsiglio of Trento—houses frescoes, period furniture, ancient weapons, and an archaeological section, while hosting cultural events and concerts during the warmer months. Having choral songs resonate in this history-steeped location is a key part of the event's charm.
In canto al castello returns year after year as a moment of connection between the choir, local audiences, and visitors, often enriched by the presence of a guest choir invited to share the stage. It is a perfect opportunity to discover one of Trentino's most authentic traditions—Alpine choral singing—during a free evening open to everyone.
