About Mountain Future Stories

Mountain Future Stories is the cultural festival spread across the Paganella plateau in Trentino. From winter through autumn, it weaves together encounters with authors, mountaineers, scientists, and artists in the squares and libraries of Andalo, Fai della Paganella, Molveno, Cavedago, and Spormaggiore. Originally launched as the Mountain Future Festival, it now explores the future of high-altitude regions through the lenses of climate change, biodiversity, and community, inviting visitors to listen to and experience the mountains as a space to be understood, not just traversed.

A widespread festival on the Paganella plateau

Mountain Future Stories is the cultural event that brings the Paganella plateau to life in the heart of Trentino, at the foot of the Brenta Dolomites. Promoted by the Dolomiti Paganella Tourist Board together with the Paganella Community and the municipalities of Andalo, Fai della Paganella, and Molveno, the festival is not confined to a single location: it is a widespread event that engages the squares, theaters, and libraries of several towns, from Andalo to Molveno, from Cavedago to Spormaggiore, and even the nearby Piana Rotaliana Königsberg.

From Mountain Future Festival to Mountain Future Stories

The event began as the Mountain Future Festival, dedicated to the future of the mountains, and has evolved in recent years into Mountain Future Stories, broadening its scope and distributing its program across almost the entire year. The central theme remains the same: imagining the future of high-altitude lands through science, nature, and new perspectives, giving a voice to physicists, astrophysicists, mountaineers, writers, and scholars who discuss climate change, light and noise pollution, the loss of biodiversity, and the relationship between humanity and the environment.

A calendar that spans the seasons

The program unfolds in two main phases. In winter, literary meetings are held primarily in the libraries of Andalo and Fai della Paganella, featuring book presentations and dialogues with authors, often accompanied by local wine tastings. In summer and autumn, from July to September, the festival moves outdoors to the squares and natural spaces of the Paganella towns, featuring performances, documentaries, readings, and meetings with leading figures in mountaineering and scientific outreach.

The voices of the mountains

  • Meetings with renowned mountaineers, sharing tales of expeditions, travels, and the history of Dolomite mountaineering.
  • Scientific outreach events dedicated to climate, mountain ecosystems, biodiversity, and sustainability.
  • Book presentations and literary readings with Italian authors.
  • Theater and music performances, documentaries, and open-air screenings.
  • The Orme — Path Festival, an event within the event, which in Fai della Paganella combines hiking, nature, and reflection.

Why experience it

Mountain Future Stories is designed for those who want to experience the Paganella and the Brenta Dolomites not just as a holiday destination, but as a territory to be listened to and understood. It is a festival that speaks of the future, community, and the environment, transforming the squares of small towns in the Province of Trento into places of dialogue and culture under the sky of Trentino-Alto Adige.

Mountain Future Stories — edition 2026

The 2026 edition of Mountain Future Stories is themed "Ideas that echo" and spreads its events from January to September across the Paganella plateau. From winter literary meetings in the libraries of Andalo and Fai della Paganella to a rich summer program between Molveno, Cavedago, and Spormaggiore, the festival brings mountaineers like Tamara Lunger, writers, scientists, and artists like Paolo Ruffini to the stage, concluding with the Orme Path Festival.

The 2026 edition of Mountain Future Stories, titled "Ideas that echo", confirms the formula of a year-round widespread festival on the Paganella plateau, in Trentino. The calendar weaves together scientific outreach, mountaineering, literature, theater, and music across several municipalities, from Andalo to Molveno.
