About Saint Nicholas in Carisolo

On December 6th, Carisolo in Val Rendena celebrates the Saint Nicholas Festival, honoring the town's patron saint to whom the local parish church is dedicated. It is a day where devotion meets folk tradition: mass and a procession with the distribution of blessed bread, the arrival of Saint Nicholas in Piazza 2 Maggio escorted by the feared Krampus dala Rendena, gifts for children, the lighting of the Christmas tree, and the evocative Saint Nicholas Bonfire at dusk. A deeply felt event for the entire community in this corner of the Province of Trento.

The Patron Saint Festival of Carisolo

The Saint Nicholas Festival is the most cherished celebration in Carisolo, a small town in Val Rendena, in the Province of Trento (Trentino-Alto Adige), nestled at the foot of the Adamello-Presanella mountain group. Saint Nicholas is the town's patron saint; the parish church that dominates the historic center, rebuilt in the mid-18th century, is dedicated to him. Every year, around December 6th, the community gathers to celebrate its saint with a day that blends religious devotion and popular tradition in a festive, pre-Christmas atmosphere.

Devotion and Tradition

The heart of the festival is the mass followed by the procession, accompanied by an ancient and highly anticipated gesture: the distribution of blessed bread, a symbol of sharing and good wishes for the community. This tradition is rooted in the valley's farming and devotional culture and still brings young and old together around the village church today.

Saint Nicholas and the Krampus dala Rendena

The most spectacular moment occurs in the afternoon when Saint Nicholas enters Piazza 2 Maggio accompanied by the Krampus dala Rendena group. According to the Alpine tradition shared by Trentino, South Tyrol, and Austrian regions, the kind saint who brings gifts to children is flanked by the diabolical, horned figures of the Krampus: a theatrical contrast between good and evil that fascinates and slightly frightens the little ones. In the square, sweets and hot drinks are offered while Saint Nicholas hands out presents to the children.

The Tree, the Bonfire, and the Evening

The day continues with the lighting of the municipal Christmas tree, organized by the local administration, and one of the most evocative rituals: the Saint Nicholas Bonfire, lit at the sports hall. Primary school children entrust their notes containing wishes and thoughts to the flames, which rise toward the sky amidst the sparks of the large fire. The festival then concludes in a convivial atmosphere with bingo, canederli in broth, and traditional local card tournaments.

A Val Rendena Tradition

Genuine and deeply rooted in the territory, the Saint Nicholas Festival in Carisolo is the ideal opportunity to discover an authentic Val Rendena tradition, far from the major tourist flows and experienced by the local community. A small but significant event that opens the doors to the Christmas season in this corner of Trentino, amidst the mountains of the Adamello-Brenta Nature Park.
