The magic of mountain village Christmas in Val di Gresta
Waiting for Christmas is the initiative that brings the authentic atmosphere of a mountain village Christmas to the streets and neighborhoods of Ronzo-Chienis throughout December. Promoted by the SAT Val di Gresta Section in collaboration with the Municipality, the Pro Loco, and local producers, the festival invites visitors of all ages to enjoy a program that blends popular faith, Alpine traditions, and local culinary delights.
The village dresses up for the holidays with decorations crafted by local children, a Christmas tree, festive music, and concerts by regional choirs. The symbolic heart of the event is the nativity scene set up in the charming Piazzèra of Chienis, which can be visited from late November until January: an installation that keeps the long-standing tradition of the Ronzo nativity scene alive, which once even featured a living nativity.
Among the most anticipated moments is the lantern procession, an evening torchlight parade that winds through the village streets until it reaches the nativity hut. The arrival of Saint Lucy with her donkey is another highlight: the saint tells a story to the children and then leads them to the church square, where she distributes gifts around a large bonfire, accompanied by hot tea, hot chocolate, and mulled wine. Various editions also feature fire shows, visits from Santa Claus, and the collection of letters from the little ones.
The festival is also a perfect opportunity to discover the products of Val di Gresta, the famous valley of organic vegetable gardens. Guided tours of the Fruit and Vegetable Consortium with tastings and themed menus at local taverns showcase the area's specialties. It is a blend of taste and conviviality that guides the public through the holiday season.
Waiting for Christmas takes place in Ronzo-Chienis, in Val di Gresta (Vallagarina), in the Province of Trento, Trentino-Alto Adige. The events are concentrated in December, with the main evening event held in the Piazzèra and the town center. Admission to the events is free and suitable for the whole family.
The main evening event of the 2026 edition will be held on Saturday, December 19, 2026, from 4:30 PM to 8:30 PM, in the Piazzèra (Via Teatro 13/B) and along the streets of Ronzo-Chienis. An evening dedicated to families and visitors, featuring music, lights, and the traditions of Val di Gresta.
The program includes a fire show by Vertik Dance, live music with the Coro Incanto Alpino and the Coro RigoDritto, catering services by local taverns, and a visit from Santa Claus for the little ones. At 5:30 PM, the Peace Lantern Procession will depart from the municipal nursery school square, reaching the nativity hut, accompanied by Christmas music throughout the evening.
Ronzo-Chienis is located in Val di Gresta, above the western shore of Lake Garda in Trentino. It can be reached from Mori (A22 motorway exit Rovereto Sud) by heading up towards Val di Gresta.
