The village festival of Val Rendena, featuring capus, polenta carbonera, and mulled wine
The Fisto Festival is one of the most cherished local celebrations in the municipality of Spiazzo, in Val Rendena, in the Province of Trento (Trentino-Alto Adige). Fisto is one of the village's small hamlets, nestled among the woods and meadows at the foot of the Brenta Dolomites and the Adamello-Presanella group. The festival began as a community celebration, an annual gathering that brings together residents, holidaymakers, and visitors to honor the hamlet's traditions.
The event is historically linked to Our Lady of Sorrows, celebrated in Fisto around September 15th: one of the altars in the parish church was dedicated to the hamlet's small community. The religious aspect of the festival revolves around this date, with Holy Mass and a procession opening the day before the square comes alive with the more convivial festivities.
The true heart of the Fisto Festival is its traditional gastronomy. The signature dish is capus, rolls wrapped in vine leaves that the women of Fisto prepare in the days leading up to the event. Alongside the capus, there is plenty of polenta carbonera, typical Val Rendena products, and, on cooler September evenings, mulled wine and homemade cakes.
The festival's traditional program alternates between moments of reflection and joy: Mass and the procession, an aperitif with local products, games and competitions for adults and children, and music from the local brass band, the Corpo Musicale di Vigo-Darè. Historical editions have also included foot races and orienteering trials along the hamlet's trails.
The festival concludes with "il Sagrin", the final evening where the Friends of the Fisto Festival, together with the Pro Loco Spiazzo, distribute cakes and hot drinks to everyone in the square. It is the most intimate and communal moment of the festival, with free admission, which ideally closes the Val Rendena summer and opens the autumn season.
The Fisto Festival takes place in the hamlet of Fisto, in Spiazzo, with free admission. The area is barrier-free, accessible to strollers and people with disabilities, with parking nearby. For information, please contact the Pro Loco Spiazzo.
