Christmas nativity scenes in Spiazzo along the Adamello valley
During the Christmas season, Val Rendena, in the province of Trento (Trentino-Alto Adige), transforms into a vast open-air theater dedicated to the nativity scene. The "Embrace of Light — Nativity Scenes in Val Rendena" event brings together dozens of Nativity displays set up by families, associations, and parish groups in the villages stretching along the valley, from Villa Rendena to Pinzolo and Carisolo. The municipality of Spiazzo is one of the most evocative stops on this trail of lights.
In Spiazzo, the main attraction is the large bas-relief nativity scene crafted on Swiss pine panels by local artist Nicola Cozzio, displayed outdoors in the main square. Meanwhile, the traditional nativity scene is set up inside the parish church. Throughout the village streets, you will encounter other Nativity displays—some small and subtle, others large and imposing—made with wooden figurines, paper, and humble materials, often brought to life by mechanisms, waterfalls, and light effects.
The most anticipated moment in Spiazzo is the New Year's torchlight procession, held on the evening of January 1st. This procession of lights, organized by the local Pro Loco, guides residents and visitors through the village to discover the nativity scenes. It is a perfect opportunity to combine the charm of the Nativity displays with the intimate atmosphere of the first days of the year in the mountains.
"Embrace of Light" began as a shared initiative among all the villages of Val Rendena and involves, in addition to Spiazzo, municipalities such as Caderzone Terme, Strembo, Bocenago, Giustino, Pinzolo, and the tourist resorts of Sant'Antonio di Mavignola and Madonna di Campiglio. The name reflects the deep connection this valley has with Christmas: it was from Val Rendena, in 2004, that a massive fir tree was donated to Pope John Paul II and displayed in St. Peter's Square in Rome. The Nativity scenes scattered throughout the valley are an authentic expression of the tradition and folk art of Trentino.
Admission to all Nativity displays is free of charge: simply wander through the valley's villages and let yourself be guided by this embrace of light.
For the 2026-2027 winter season, Spiazzo will once again participate in the "Embrace of Light — Nativity Scenes in Val Rendena" valley-wide event, which traditionally runs from December 23 to January 7. The large bas-relief nativity scene on Swiss pine panels carved by artist Nicola Cozzio is expected to be displayed in the main square, while the parish church will host the traditional nativity scene.
As every year, the highlight is the New Year's torchlight procession on January 1st, during which visitors discover the Nativity displays set up throughout the village. The final dates and times for the 2026-2027 edition will be published by the organizers in the preceding weeks. Admission is free of charge.
