Rites, processions, and silent reflection leading to Easter in the town of Saint Pio
Every spring, Holy Week in San Giovanni Rotondo, a famous town in the Gargano area of the Foggia province (Apulia), transforms the historic center into a journey of faith, memory, and reflection. In the town made world-famous by the figure of Saint Pio of Pietrelcina, the days leading up to Easter weave together liturgical celebrations and ancient folk traditions passed down through generations, involving parishes, brotherhoods, and thousands of the faithful.
The week opens with sacred music, featuring a concert by the "Te Deum Laudamus" Polyphonic Choir in the church of Santa Maria delle Grazie. Palm Sunday marks the solemn entry into the week with the blessing of the palms and a procession toward the church of Saint Pio of Pietrelcina, accompanied by a monumental Stations of the Cross.
Holy Thursday begins the most solemn days: following the Mass of the Lord's Supper, altars of reposeโknown as "sepolcri"โare set up in all the city's churches, becoming the destination for the traditional visits of the faithful. In the church of Sant'Orsola, one of the most evocative moments takes place: the Office of Tenebrae, accompanied by the symbolic "earthquake," an intense evocation of the Passion of Christ.
The most anticipated moment is the procession of Our Lady of Sorrows and the dead Christ on Good Friday. At sunset, the city gathers in prayer: the statue of Our Lady of Sorrows winds slowly through the streets in an atmosphere charged with emotion, culminating in the moving encounter with her dead Son on Corso Umberto I, near the Town Hall. The procession departs from the ancient church of San Nicola and follows the fourteen stations of the Cross along the streets of the center, including Corso Regina Margherita, Piazza Padre Pio, Corso Matteotti, and Corso Roma, before returning to the church of San Nicola.
More than just a religious observance, the Holy Week of San Giovanni Rotondo is a collective experience that preserves faith, emotion, and identity. The town, which welcomes millions of pilgrims every year heading to the Sanctuary of Saint Pio, experiences a more intimate and collected dimension during these days, as the Gargano community gathers around its centuries-old rites. It is an event that unites residents and visitors in a shared journey toward Easter.
Holy Week 2026 in San Giovanni Rotondo opened on Saturday, March 28, with a concert by the "Te Deum Laudamus" Polyphonic Choir in the church of Santa Maria delle Grazie, followed on Sunday, March 29, by Palm Sunday. The Easter Triduum marked the central days, from Holy Thursday with the Mass of the Lord's Supper to the evocative procession of Our Lady of Sorrows on Good Friday, April 3. After the Easter Vigil on Holy Saturday in the church of Saint Pio, Easter Sunday, April 5, featured solemn Eucharistic celebrations, with the second one officiated by Archbishop Franco Moscone.
San Giovanni Rotondo can be reached by car from the A14 motorway exit at Poggio Imperiale or San Severo, continuing along the roads of the Gargano. The nearest train station is San Severo, which is connected to the town by bus lines. The reference airport is Bari-Palese.
Celebrations and processions take place in the churches of the historic center and along the city streets and are free to attend. It is recommended to check the local parish channels for updated schedules of individual rites.
