Christmas in the ancient heart of Agrigento, between the Diocesan Museum and the Cathedral
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
Christmas on the Hill is the annual event that lights up the festive atmosphere in the oldest heart of Agrigento, the capital of southwestern Sicily. The "hill" that gives the festival its name is home to the Cathedral of San Gerlando and the Diocesan Museum (MuDiA), two iconic landmarks that become the hub of a rich program promoted by the Archdiocese of Agrigento in collaboration with local organizations.
The program blends spiritual, cultural, musical, and recreational moments in the spirit of Christmas tradition. The popular heart of the festival is the Christmas novenas held in the courtyards and streets of the historic center, brought to life by associations from the ancient Rabato district: every evening, in the days leading up to Christmas, the streets of the hill fill with songs and lights, in a ritual deeply rooted in Agrigento's popular devotion.
Among the most anticipated events are the sacred and Christmas music concerts held in the Cathedral and churches of the center, guided tours of the Diocesan Museum and its garden, and trails dedicated to nativity scenes and sacred art. There are also plenty of moments designed for families and children, with workshops and educational activities as part of the MuDiA project, particularly around the Epiphany.
Visiting Agrigento during Christmas on the Hill means discovering a city different from the summer version associated with the Valley of the Temples: the historic center, gathered around the Cathedral and the maze of medieval streets, reveals itself in an intimate and cozy dimension. The event is part of the wider Christmas program in Agrigento, which includes markets, nativity scenes, and initiatives spread throughout the province, yet it retains its own identity tied to the religious and artistic heritage of the Sicilian diocese.
The dates and detailed program for the 2026 edition of Christmas on the Hill have not yet been announced. The festival, promoted by the Archdiocese of Agrigento, is usually held during the Christmas season, from mid-December to the Epiphany, between the Cathedral of San Gerlando and the Diocesan Museum in the historic center of the Sicilian capital.
Based on previous editions, the program is expected to feature novenas in the streets of the historic center, sacred and Christmas music concerts in the Cathedral, guided tours of the Diocesan Museum, and activities for children related to the Epiphany. The official program will be published by the organizers closer to the holidays.
Agrigento can be reached by car via the SS189 from Palermo (about 2 hours) and the SS115 from the southern coast. The Agrigento Centrale train station is connected to Palermo. The historic center and the Cathedral hill can be reached on foot from the city center; a dedicated shuttle service is sometimes available during the festival.
Many events, especially guided tours of the Diocesan Museum and the Cathedral, require booking. For information, you can call +39 327 7549152 or check the channels of the Archdiocese of Agrigento.
Winter evenings in Agrigento can be chilly: we recommend appropriate clothing for outdoor events and the novenas in the streets of the historic center.
