About Sant'Antonio Living Nativity

Every year, between Christmas and Epiphany, the Sant'Antonio da Padova Living Nativity transforms the historic Poiu di Fossi district of Palma di Montechiaro into a vast open-air stage. Promoted by the Sant'Antonio da Padova parish community, the event features a sacred reenactment of the Nativity and traditional Sicilian crafts, complete with workshops, costumed actors, local food tastings, and the evocative Magi procession on Epiphany.

The Living Nativity in the historic heart of Palma di Montechiaro

During the Christmas season, the streets of the popular district known to locals as Poiu di Fossi become the natural stage for one of the most cherished events in Palma di Montechiaro, a town in the province of Agrigento, Sicily. The Sant'Antonio da Padova Living Nativity, organized by the local parish, meticulously reconstructs the Bethlehem of two thousand years ago among the alleys, courtyards, and ancient homes of the historic center.

A journey through faith and tradition

The route begins in an alley off via Roma and concludes on the churchyard of the Chiesa di Sant'Antonino, where the sacred representation of the Nativity—featuring Joseph, Mary, and the Baby Jesus—is set. Along the way, visitors encounter dozens of costumed actors bringing daily life from the past to life, accompanied by the festive sounds of traditional musicians.

Workshops and ancient crafts

The heart of the event lies in the artisan workshops that showcase the traditional trades of the Sicilian countryside. Among the scenes set up, visitors can admire:

  • the baker, the blacksmith, the carpenter, and the shoemaker at work;
  • the tavern, the washerwomen, and housewives busy preparing homemade bread and pasta;
  • the production of ricotta and cheeses, with tastings of local traditional products.

The Magi procession on Epiphany

The most anticipated moment arrives on Epiphany, when the Magi procession sets off from the Chiesa di Sant'Antonino, winding through the nativity scene until it reaches the Nativity hut, sealing the religious significance of the representation.

A tradition that grows year by year

Born from the initiative of the parish community and neighborhood volunteers, the Living Nativity has become a staple of the local Christmas calendar, drawing visitors from across the province of Agrigento. The event combines popular devotion, the promotion of the historic center, and the rediscovery of the crafts and flavors of Sicily's past.
